El combinado británico participará por cuarta vez en el torneo europeo de selecciones. Su resultado ha sido siempre el mismo. eliminado en fase de grupos. Es por ello que, Steve Clark y sus pupilos, buscarán hacerse con el mejor resultado histórico del país en esta competición.
Para ello deberá luchar ante Alemania, la anfitriona, Hungría y Suiza, tras quedar encuadrada en el grupo A. Un grupo donde la anfitriona se posiciona como gran favorita. Sin embargo, los combinados restantes tiene opciones para hacerse con un billete para la siguiente fase.
Historia en las Eurocopas anteriores
El país británico, como hemos dicho, ha participado tan solo en tres ediciones anteriormente (1992,1996 y 2000) y en todos ha tenido que hacer las maletas a las primeras de cambio, en la fase de grupos. La primera edición en la que ha participado, allá por 1992, ya se enfrentó al conjunto alemán en la segunda jornada. Su registro fue de una victoria (3-0 ante la Comunidad de Estados Independientes) y dos derrotas (1-0 ante Países Bajos y 0-2 ante Alemania). Escocia finalizó 3º en la clasificación, a tan sólo un punto del conjunto bávaro en aquel grupo B de la Eurocopa jugada en Suecia.
Tras su primera participación, los escoceses no tardaron en verse representados de nuevo por su selección en esta competición. Solo tuvieron que esperar cuatro años, a la siguiente edición. Además, una edición especial, ya que se celebró en el país vecino, con el que se guarda una gran rivalidad. Caprichoso el futuro, quiso que se enfrentaran ambas selecciones, Inglaterra y Escocia, en la fase de grupos. Partido de alta tensión y gran rivalidad. Además, también se volvió a ver la caras, como en la anterior edición, con Países Bajos. Cerraba el grupo Suiza. El saldó final del conjunto norbritánico fue de una victoria (1-0 vs Suiza), un empate (0-0 vs Países Bajos) y una derrota(0-2 vs Inglaterra, justamente). En aquel grupo A, Escocia fue 3º, nuevamente, empatando a puntos con Países Bajos. La diferencia de goles también estuvo empatada (-1) entre ambos conjuntos, por tanto, el criterio de desempate fue el de los goles a favor(1 de los británicos y 3 por los Países Bajos).
Desde ahí, Escocia vivió una odisea y tardó en volver a vivir una Eurocopa. Concretamente, 25 años. Volvió a participar en la Euro 2020, que se celebró en 2021. Fíjense si es caprichoso el futuro, que volvió a depararnos un Inglaterra vs Escocia. La celebración de una edición atípica volvió a celebrarse, en parte, en Inglaterra, otra vez. Esta vez, los norbritánico se marcharon sin celebrar una victoria en esta edición: un empate (0-0 ante Inglaterra) y dos derrotas (ante Croacia por 3-1 y ante República Checa por 0-2). Por tanto, el combinado escocés fue último en aquel grupo D.
Convocatoria para la EURO2024 y posible once
Stave Clarke ha citado a 26 jugadores para viajar a Alemania a representar a su país:
- Porteros: Angus Gunn (Norwich City), Liam Kelly (Motherwell) y Zander Clark (Heart)
- Defensa: Anthony Ralston (Celtic) , Andrew Robertson (Liverpool), Grant Hanley (Norwich City), Kieran Tierney (Arsenal), Jack Hendry (Al-Ettifaq), Ryan Porteous (Watford), Liam Cooper (Leeds United), Ross McCrorie (Bristol City), Greg Taylor (Celtic) y Scott McKenna (FC Kobenhavn).
- Centrocampistas: Scott McTominay (Manchester United), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Callum McGregor (Celtic), Billy Gilmour (Brighton), Stuart Armstrong (Southampton), Lewis Morgan (New York Red Bull), Ryan Jack (Rangers), Kenny McLean (Norwich City y James Forrest (Celtic).
- Delantero: Lawrence Shankland (Hearts), Ché Adams (Southampton), Ryan Christie (Bournemouth) y Tommy Conway (Bristol City).
Con todos estos jugadores citados, podemos definir el once tipo de la selección escocesa puede formar: Gunn; Ralston, Hanley, Hendry, Tierney, Robertson; McTominay, Gilmour; McGinn, Christie; y Shankland. A pesar de hacer pruebas con una línea de 4, en principio, Stave Clarke formará con un 1-5-2-3.
Jugadores clave
El conjunto norbritánico se centra en tres jugadores, fundamentalmente, debido a su importancia en el equipo y su trayectoria individual. La pieza clave de esta selección es John McGinn, el centrocampista del Aston Villa, es pieza angular y uno de los fijos en el once del combinado escocés. A pesar de ser un centrocampista en su club, en la selección nacional es necesario en la siguiente altura del campo. El 7 juega por detrás del delantero, enlazando con el doble pivote que suele formar Clarke, lo que le hace ser fundamental en la generación de goles. El nacido en Glasgow suma 18 goles y 11 asistencias en 66 partidos.

Este sí juega en ese doble pivote, sentándose como uno de los fijos en el XI donde varía su acompañante. A pesar de haber formado como central en el pasado, Clarke lo posiciona como un doble pivote. Suma ya 49 internacionalidades, anotando 8 goles y repartiendo 3 asistencias.
Expectativas
El combinado escocés tiene claro cual es su deber. De conseguir el pase de fase de grupos, los nombres de estos futbolistas quedarán escritos en los anales de la historia del país, consiguiendo un hito jamás visto en sus tierras. Para ello, deben pelar por la segunda plaza o ser uno de los mejores terceros (se presupone la primera posición de Alemania). Lucharán ante uno de las revelaciones de la pasada EURO, como Hungría, y la siempre fiable y correosa Suiza.
