Argentina enfrentará este miércoles a Inglaterra por las semifinales de la Copa del Mundo 2026. Es un partido que en lo futbolístico promete: son dos grandes equipos que han tenido buenos rendimientos durante el torneo. Sin embargo, este cruce tiene un trasfondo político, social y emotivo, que hace que no sea un partido más.
HISTORIAL
Argentinos e ingleses se han enfrentado en 5 ocasiones en Mundiales. La primera fue en 1962 con victoria inglesa por 3-1. Luego se enfrentaron en 1966 y ganó nuevamente el seleccionado inglés. En 1986 y 1998 fue victoria argentina, y en 2002, por última vez, triunfó Inglaterra.
ARGENTINA Y LA PREVIA DE 1986
Para empezar a hablar sobre el partido de cuartos de final de México 1986, debemos retroceder en el tiempo. En 1982 sucede la Guerra de Malvinas. La dictadura militar que gobernaba en Argentina estaba al borde del colapso. En este contexto, Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri decidió realizar la «Operación Rosario» y, de esta manera, el 2 de abril de 1982 las tropas argentinas desembarcaron en las Islas Malvinas e izaron la bandera argentina en Puerto Stanley. Argentina volvía a poner sobre la mesa el debate por el reclamo de soberanía sobre estas islas, que estaban siendo ocupadas ilegítimamente por el Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña. Días más tarde del desembarco de los argentinos, los británicos ordenaron el desalojo de las islas, algo que nunca sucedió, y se terminó desatando el conflicto bélico. En esta guerra participaron muchos jóvenes argentinos que con poca instrucción militar y pocos materiales tuvieron que luchar y defender a su país. El desenlace fue fatídico para Argentina, que terminó perdiendo la guerra. Sin embargo, uno de los actos que más dolor generó en el pueblo argentino fue el hundimiento del ARA General Belgrano. Este era un crucero de las Fuerzas Armadas argentinas que fue atacado fuera de la zona de exclusión, es decir, ilegítimamente. Finalmente, la guerra terminó con 649 soldados argentinos caídos y con soldados que volvieron al continente y decidieron quitarse la vida. En este marco, la dictadura militar terminó cayendo y en 1983 Argentina volvió a ser un país democrático.
ARGENTINA-INGLATERRA 1986 EN LA PREVIA
Ahora sí, dado el contexto político y social previo, podemos entender que para 1986 las heridas de aquella guerra estaban abiertas. La venganza para Argentina llegó en un partido de fútbol. El cruce entre Argentina e Inglaterra correspondía a los cuartos de final y tuvo lugar en el mítico Estadio Azteca. En la previa del partido, Maradona, capitán y figura argentina, y Bilardo, DT de Argentina, expresaron que era un partido de fútbol como cualquier otro. Sin embargo, todos sabían que había algo más.
DESDE LA TRIBUNA
Ambos equipos saltaron al campo de juego y, desde el minuto 1, el partido empezó a tomar un color y una tensión inmensa. En las tribunas, los barrabravas argentinos enfrentaban a golpe de puño a los hooligans ingleses. Los argentinos hicieron correr a los británicos y los conflictos en la tribuna fueron parte del espectáculo, como si en cada golpe se estuviese cobrando venganza por lo sucedido en la guerra. Más allá de eso, era en el campo de juego donde lo mejor iba a suceder.
LA MANO DE DIOS
El partido tuvo de todo, pero lo mejor llegó en el segundo tiempo. A los 51′ Maradona tomó la pelota a la altura del círculo central en campo rival, y comenzó a gambetear y a driblear a todos los ingleses que fueran a marcarlo. Cuando Diego llegó a la medialuna del área tocó para Valdano, que, aunque no controló bien, tuvo la fortuna de que el defensor inglés rechazara la pelota y la tirara para su arco. Maradona fue corriendo a alcanzar la pelota a la altura del punto penal. El arquero Shilton, que salió velozmente a cortar con el puño, no sabía a lo que se enfrentaba. El astro argentino entró al área y notó que no iba a llegar a cabecear, por lo que decidió meter la mano. La pelota golpeó en «la mano de Dios» y tocó la red del arco. Argentina ganaba 1-0 y, como si fuera justicia divina, el gol sería con la mano, gracias a la picardía de Maradona. Unos minutos más tarde llegaría otra obra de arte.
EL GOL DEL SIGLO
A los 55′, Maradona agarró la pelota en la mitad del campo argentino, la pisó y pasó a dos jugadores ingleses que lo marcaban, dejándolos en ridículo. Condujo por la izquierda, cortó para adentro, esquivó a cualquiera inglés que se le venía encima e ingresó al área. Shilton achicó, Diego lo gambeteó y el defensor no llegó a cortar de atrás. Maradona trazó con su botín una pincelada magnífica para concluir su mayor obra de arte. Así nació el gol del siglo. Argentina le ganaba a Inglaterra. Todos los argentinos gritaron el gol. En algunas casas, festejaron doble para que se oigan los gritos de gol de los soldados caídos en la guerra y de los desaparecidos durante la dictadura. Citando al relator Víctor Hugo Morales, «para que el país entero sea un puño apretado gritando por Argentina». La selección cobraba venganza en una cancha, donde mejor nos salen las cosas.
EL LLAMADO CON LA TOTA
Finalmente el partido terminó 2 a 1. Argentina pasó a semifinales y, sobre todas las cosas, le ganó a Inglaterra. Maradona llamó a su madre al terminar el partido y la llamada salió en la radio. Su madre aseguró: «Hoy me hiciste la madre más feliz del mundo». El final de la historia lo conocemos todos: Argentina ganó su segundo Mundial con Diego Armando Maradona como figura.
LA PREVIA DE ARGENTINA-INGLATERRA 2026
Este miércoles a 40 años de 1986 y a 44 años de la Guerra de Malvinas, la selección albiceleste tiene la chance de tomar venganza nuevamente, de poder «malvinizar» a través del fútbol. Si hay goles, se gritarán el doble. Aunque Scaloni se mostró calmo y declaró que «es solo un partido de fútbol», lo mismo dijeron Bilardo y Maradona en 1986.

Ningún jugador de esta selección vivió el Mundial del 86 ni la Guerra de Malvinas. Pero los argentinos tenemos Memoria y queremos Justicia. De pequeños nos cuentan sobre Malvinas, y muchos tenemos familiares o amigos de amigos que han luchado en Malvinas. Argentina tendrá una chance de jugar al fútbol y pasar a la final de un Mundial nada más ni nada menos que ganándole a Inglaterra. En 1986 Maradona brilló. El deseo es que Messi esta vez se vista de Maradona y pueda lograr que el país entero sea un puño apretado gritando por Argentina.
EL QUE RÍE ÚLTIMO RÍE MEJOR…
Lo cierto es que en la previa del partido muchos exjugadores ingleses han dicho que Argentina no tendrá chances ante su selección y otras cosas negativas sobre el plantel sudamericano. Sin embargo, como se dice en Argentina, en la cancha se ven los pingos. Por el lado de Argentina no hubo ninguna declaración polémica ni picante, se guardan todo para el partido. Por último, se confirmó que Argentina vestirá la camiseta suplente como en el 86.
MALVINAS ARGENTINAS
