A todos nos gusta que nuestro equipo gane, pero en Portugal, la gloria es un privilegio casi exclusivo de los tres grandes. Durante 91 años de liga, el Benfica, el FC Porto y el Sporting de Portugal han dominado con mano de hierro, fallando en tan solo dos ocasiones. La última vez que un invitado sorpresa les batió fue en la temporada 00/01, cuando el Boavista tocó el cielo. Sin embargo, aquel brindis con la gloria terminó siendo con veneno. Hoy, de aquel equipo campeón solo quedan sus cenizas. Víctima de un destino que resultó inevitable, en el verano de 2025 el club desapareció.
Los ingredientes de una temporada que acabaría siendo histórica
En Oporto, desde hace más de cien años, conviven el sentimiento por el Boavista y por el FC Porto. Mientras en Do Dragão se acostumbraron pronto a ganar, en Bessa se resignaban a ver a sus vecinos vencer. Sin embargo, en los años 70, las ‘Panteras Negras’ se asentaron en la élite y empezaron a soñar. Durante esa exitosa década conquistaron tres Taças, el torneo donde los humildes se rebelan ante el dominio de los tiranos.
Pero el Boavista no se conformaba; quería más. En los 90 volvieron a saborear la gloria conquistando dos Taças más, pero el hambre de los ajedrezados seguía siendo insaciable. Y el destino les tenía reservado algo mucho más grande. En la mente de los miles de ajedrezados quedará para el recuerdo aquella histórica temporada 2000/2001, cuando el Boavista tocó el cielo al alzarse con su primera y única Liga, rompiendo un dominio que parecía eterno.
El milagro se gestó de la mano de Jaime Pacheco, un técnico inexperto que se hizo un hombre en el club. Pero Pacheco necesitaba materia prima con la que llevar a cabo su fútbol: un estilo poco vistoso pero muy eficaz. De los hombres de las últimas dos Taças apenas quedaban piezas, pero en el verano del 2000 aterrizó en Bessa una legión de desconocidos. Nadie diría entonces que los Petit, Duda, Rui Óscar y Elpídio Silva se convertirían en la envidia de Europa; todo ello junto a la irrupción meteórica de un muro bajo palos llamado Ricardo.
Una temporada con la que los miles de ajedrezados sueñan a diario
La campaña 00/01 arrancó de forma fulgurante; el equipo era un puñal ofensivo y encadenó dos goleadas para ser los primeros líderes. Sin embargo, la pólvora se mojó pronto: un empate ante el modesto Estrela Amadora y una derrota frente al Braga sembraron las dudas. El sueño parecía utópico.
Pero Jaime Pacheco obró el milagro ajustando las piezas. El Boavista se convirtió en un bloque sólido, convirtiendo en inexpugnable el estadio Do Bessa. Fuera de casa supieron aguantar las embestidas y aprovechar sus ocasiones para poco a poco ir escalando. El crecimiento nació desde la retaguardia, con la irrupción de un Ricardo estelar que mantuvo la portería imbatida en 16 ocasiones. Arriba, el talento no faltaba y cada llegada de los Erwin Sánchez, Martelinho y Elpídio Silva se convertía en un nuevo gol.
Pese a la mejoría, el FC Porto lideraba sin fisuras hasta la jornada 17. Aquel derbi en Bessa estaba marcado en rojo. Pacheco preparó una «encerrona» que Martelinho culminó con una contra letal. El Boavista se cargaba al Porto y se ponía nuevamente líder. En el estadio Das Antas perdían el liderato, y la siguiente semana le entregaban a su vecino una suculenta ventaja de cuatro puntos tras caer con el Benfica.
Aun con el viento a favor, el escepticismo nacional rodeaba a los ajedrezados. Nadie creía en ellos, pero semana tras semana seguían ahí. A falta de dos jornadas el Boavista solo necesitaba una victoria para tocar el cielo. En la penúltima jornada, la parte blanquinegra de la ciudad se vestía de gala ante la que podía ser su primera liga. En casa recibían al ya descendido Desportivo das Aves, y con una entereza absoluta, el Boavista venció por 3-0, conquistando una Liga que 55 años después volvía a ser de un equipo humilde.
El caso «Apito Dourado» y la caída a los infiernos
El histórico triunfo de los ajedrezados enseguida estuvo envuelto en la sospecha de las compras arbitrales. El presidente de la Liga, Valentim Loureiro, era el padre de João, el presidente del Boavista; una conexión que invitaba al ostracismo. Las dudas estaban ahí, hasta que en 2004 estalló el caso ‘Apito Dourado’. Este escándalo destapó una red de sobornos y favores arbitrales que implicó a varios clubes, situando a las «Panteras Negras» en el centro de la diana.
El Boavista estaba investigado, y bajo lupa de la justicia jamás pudieron replicar en el césped lo conseguido en 2001. Mientras tanto, en la sombra de los despachos se celebraba un juicio muy mediático que acabó con el Boavista en segunda. El golpe no pudo ser más inoportuno; con una economía asfixiada por las deudas, el club se vio relegado al abismo profesional. La temporada 08/09 en segunda no fue fácil, sin recursos económicos y con la moral por los suelos, el Boavista acabaría cayendo a los infiernos.
Un regreso envenenado y la nefasta gestión de Gerard López
La caída a los infiernos fue dolorosa y dejó al club en la lona. Con la entidad en la «UCI» y sin recursos la salvación pasaba por un regreso rápido a la élite. Pero sin posibilidad para pelear el ascenso en el césped, la única esperanza a la que podían agarrarse era el clavo ardiendo de la justicia. Tras años de litigios, en 2014 finalmente la justicia les dio la razón. Se revocó el descenso administrativo, devolviendo a los ajedrezados a Primera. Sin embargo, el retorno estaba condicionado al pago de las deudas salariales, un milagro financiero que lograron cumplir sobre la bocina.
El Boavista estaba de vuelta en la élite, pero los puestos de privilegio eran ya un recuerdo lejano. En 2020, sumidos en una crisis crónica, creyeron ver la salvación en la llegada de Gerard López. Sin embargo, en Bessa no sabían donde se estaban metiendo. El paso del empresario español terminó siendo un ‘pufo’. Tanto fue así que la FIFA acabó inhabilitándole y castigando al club con un embargo que les prohibía fichar durante dos temporadas.
En 2025, sin capital ni capacidad de regenerar la plantilla, llegó el descenso definitivo. Los ajedrezados 11 años más tarde abandonaban la primera división, viéndose relegados a Segunda. Sin embargo, los problemas financieros eran tales que no pudieron afrontar los pagos de inscripción en Segunda, ni en ninguna de las múltiples categorías regionales. Era el fin de un histórico, que vio como sus más de 120 años de historia fueron tirados por la borda. Un final trágico de la mano de un Gerard López que, apenas un año antes, había enterrado al Girondins de Burdeos.
