El alero francés, William Howard, firma por el Coviran Granada hasta final de temporada para ayudar a sustituir a los lesionados Elias Valtonen y Jovan Kljajic
Tras confirmarse ayer las lesiones de Jovan Kljajic y Elias Valtonen durante las ventanas FIBA, el Coviran Granada confirmó esta mañana que ambos jugadores estarán varios meses fuera de las canchas para recuperarse de sus dolencias. Rápidamente, el club rojinegro cerró previamente en el día de ayer un nuevo integrante exterior para la plantilla que ayude a sustituirlos, William Howard, un alero francés con un poco de experiencia en el pasado en ACB y que se incorpora hasta final de temporada.
William Howard (Montbrison, 25 de octubre de 1993) comenzó su carrera deportiva en la cantera del BCM Gravelines de la Pro A, la primera división francesa, hasta debutar con el primer equipo. La temporada 2014-2015, se marchó cedido a la Pro B al Denain ASC Voltaire y, una buena temporada en segunda, le valió para firmar en verano de 2015 por el Hyères-Toulon Var Basket. Con el equipo amarillo y azul marino consiguió el ascenso a Pro A y se asentó en la máxima categoría del baloncesto francés con un promedio de 9,6 puntos y 4,6 rebotes en el ejercicio 2016-2017.
Fue este último año, cuando decidió dar un paso más en su carrera y fichar por un clásico del baloncesto francés, el Limoges CSP, en el que tras otra buena temporada, dio el salto a la G-League al filial de los Utah Jazz, el Salt Lake City Stars. Apenas unos meses bastaron para convencer a los Houston Rockets para hacerse con sus servicios, firmandole un acuerdo dual en el que podía jugar tanto en la NBA, como en el filial de la G-League, los Río Grande Valley Vipers.
Regreso a Europa y breve experiencia ACB
En verano de 2020, regresó a su Francia natal para jugar en otro clásico del baloncesto francés, el ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne, y tras dos temporadas en la LNB Élite, firmó en julio de 2022 con el Joventut Badalona. Apenas jugó cinco minutos en un encuentro de ACB en la primera jornada de aquella temporada. Su primer paso por España fue austero, y a final de temporada volvió a Francia para jugar en el Le Mans Sarthe Basket con el que sacó de nuevo su mejor versión promediando 12 puntos, 6 rebotes y 2,4 asistencias por encuentro.
En octubre del año pasado, regresó a España para jugar en Bàsquet Girona, fue uno de los mejores jugadores del arranque del equipo a pesar de las múltiples derrotas y en seis encuentros en la Liga Endesa mostró mucho mejor nivel que en su primera etapa, aunque acabó siendo cortado y completó la temporada en las filas del Nanterre 92 francés con el que jugó Basketball Champions League y en 12 partidos de liga aportó 9,4 puntos y 5,3 rebotes de media.
Ahora, afronta su tercera etapa en España, tras quedar como agente libre en abril, con ganas de reivindicarse tras sus dos primeras en la Liga Endesa, en la que en seis encuentros promedió 7,3 puntos, 2,5 rebotes y 1,3 asistencias por partido. A sus 32 años, el alero de 2,03 de altura afrontará el papel de intentar sustituir la figura clave de Elias Valtonen aportando agilidad, bote de balón, rebote, personalidad y buen porcentaje en tiro de tres en la pizarra de Ramón Díaz.
