Andrea Kimi Antonelli brilló bajos las luces de Las Vegas, el italiano hizo valer una estrategia a una parada temprana para remontar desde la decimoséptima posición hasta el podio.
Kimi tuvo una difícil sesión de clasificación el sábado. Con unas condiciones de pista complicadas debido a la lluvia en el debut del italiano en el circuito estadounidense, el de Mercedes no pudo pasar el corte de la Q1, por lo que se avecinaba una carrera dura para llegar a los puntos.
Nada más lejos de la realidad, los de Brackley optaron por salir con blandos, siendo los únicos de la parrilla en montar el neumático más blando. Tras los incidentes de la salida, apareció un VSC en la vuelta 2 que Mercedes no dudó en aprovechar.

A partir de la parada, Kimi se centró en cuidar los neumáticos con el objetivo de no parar más, el italiano se encontraba al fondo del pelotón, pero cuando llegaron las paradas fue avanzando posiciones prácticamente sin perder ritmo.
Una vez con todos los pilotos habiendo realizado sus paradas, Antonelli estaba cuarto en pista, pero con unos veloces Piastri y Leclerc por detrás. Además, Carlos Sainz se acercaba para meterse en el intervalo de 5 segundos para aprovecharse de su penalización.
El Mercedes creó un tren de DRS con el McLaren y el Ferrari, pero Piastri no podía adelantar. Kimi controló al australiano de cerca, sin permitirle una oportunidad clara de adelantamiento. Sin embargo, parecía cuestión de tiempo que acabara cayendo con estos pilotos con neumáticos más frescos.
Pero cuando llegaron las últimas 10 vueltas, Antonelli abrió hueco y ¡sacó del DRS a sus perseguidores! Una hazaña para tener unos neumáticos 20 vueltas más viejos que sus rivales. Pero no solo eso, sino que subió el ritmo y abrió la distancia, incluso se acercó a su compañero de equipo, que estaba en la tercera posición.
Finalmente, el italiano llegó a 3 segundos de Russell y consiguió una distancia de más de 5 segundos con el monegasco, por lo que salvó la quinta posición, ya que Piastri heredó la cuarta.
No obstante, la descalificación de los McLaren realzó la hazaña del rookie, ya que subió otras dos posiciones consiguiendo su segundo podio consecutivo.
“Honestamente fue demasiado arriesgada la estrategia, el graining podría ser factor, no sabía si podía hacer solo una parada, pero pudimos seguir adelante. Teníamos muchas dudas entre una o dos paradas, pero cuando vimos que no hubo graining fuimos hasta el final, estoy muy contento”, comentó el piloto de Mercedes tras la carrera.
Además, Antonelli tuvo que lidiar con una sanción de 5 segundos, que no acaba de entender: “Creo que fue muy complicado. Mi sugerencia es que (deslicé) un poco, pero realmente no lo sentí en el coche, así que necesito revisar la cámara onboard y entender cuál fue el problema”, añadió Kimi.
Antonelli está firmando un gran final de temporada, con dos podios en las últimas dos carreras. No cabe duda, que está sobreviviendo al reto de debutar en Mercedes y, poco a poco, ya deja ver destellos de su calidad al volante.
