Hubo un año —uno que en Bilbao se pronuncia todavía con una mezcla de sonrisa, nostalgia y un inevitable “qué equipazo” — en el que el Athletic volvió a recordar a toda Europa que San Mamés no es un estadio: es un volcán. La temporada 2011-12 en la Europa League no fue solo una campaña brillante; fue una declaración de identidad y un aviso al continente de que el fútbol de autor también habla euskera.

Marcelo Bielsa aterrizó en Bilbao como quien llega con un cuaderno lleno de fórmulas y la idea, casi romántica, de que sus equipos deben correr como si no hubiera mañana y jugar como si no existiera el miedo. Y aquella plantilla —una mezcla perfecta de garra, energía y talento muy de casa— decidió creerle.

Ahí estaban Llorente en modo killer, Muniain como adolescente indomable, De Marcos corriendo por tres, Ander Herrera repartiendo poesía y Javi Martínez gobernando el campo como un capitán sin brazalete.

Si hay un partido que definió esa Europa League, fue el Manchester United – Athletic. El día en que Europa empezo a  mirar al Athletic  con respeto y  sorpresa.

Los leones le pegaron un repaso al United en su propia casa: en Old Trafford se adelantó Rooney al minuto 22, pero los de Bielsa reaccionaron  justo antes del descanso con un gol de Llorente tras un gran balón largo. En la segunda parte, De Marcos aprovechó un pase de Herrera para empatar y ya en el añadido, Muniain definió para poner el 3-2. Los ingleses lo intentaron hasta el final: Rooney metió un penalti en el 92, pero no cambió el guion. El Athletic dominó el ritmo, movió rápido la pelota, robó muchos balones y desarmó a la defensa local una y otra vez.

La final que no borró el sueño

La final en Bucarest ante el Atlético de Madrid no tuvo el final deseado. Falcao decidió escribir su propia historia y dejó al Athletic sin el trofeo.
Pero, aunque la copa voló hacia Madrid, el espíritu de aquel equipo sigue siendo uno de los mayores orgullos modernos de la afición rojiblanca.

Porque las finales se ganan. Sí.
Pero los recuerdos —los que hacen vibrar, emocionar y creer— también.
