Una afición eufórica alentaba a los neerlandeses desde el inicio del partido en una ambiente totalmente cargado.

Minutos después Watkins sería protagonista de nuevo en un mano a mano. Una excelente combinación entre Rogers, Buendía y el ariete provocaba la ocasión más clara hasta entonces. A pesar del fuera de juego pitado después, Watanabe conseguía sacarlo bajo las líneas.
El cuadro de Emery iba creciendo con el transcurso de los minutos pero la presión enemiga los ponía entre las cuerdas a la hora de defender.
Ya en el ecuador de esta primera parte, el Feyenoord conseguía encerrar al Aston Villa. Un gran ímpetu los llevó a generar 3 ocasiones en un periodo breve de tiempo. La pasividad en la zaga de Emery empezaba a estar expuesta.
Posteriormente el ritmo que mostraba el encuentro era ágil. Las acciones de ataque de ambos equipos eran rápidas.
Transcurría el 30′ y llegaría el primer gol anulado. Una falta en ataque tras un córner impidió que un cabezazo de Ueda subiera al marcador.
En el Villa las acciones pasaban por los pies de Rogers. El ’27’ buscaba constantemente el pase filtrado para habilitar a su ariete, pero sin éxito.
Los de Robin van Persie atacaban más por bandas. Un Maatsen tímido en defensa y un Matty Cash irregular eran la llave para generar peligro.
Ambos equipos se marchaban a vestuarios con un local ligeramente superior a su rival.
Segunda parte
El conjunto neerlandés seguía avisando por las bandas. En este inicio tenían entre ceja y ceja la portería de Bizot, manteniendo el esférico y sin incomodidad sin ella.
5′ después del inicio, el Feyenoord amenazaba una vez más. Otra jugada lateral dirigida al área pequeña provocaba que el capitán Steijn rematara al centro tras un rechace.

Tras este jarro de agua fría, el partido bajaba de revoluciones y los papeles se invertían. Con el gol a favor, los de Emery cogían confianza y los locales asumían esa desventaja.
Para aprovechar ese golpe anímico, Emery incluía cambios ofensivos. Pero los de van Persie iban recomponiéndose con cambios efectivos que provocaban ocasiones interesantes.
La incorporación de revulsivos causó efecto en el cuadro del técnico español. Un veloz Malen ganaba en carrera y atraía a la defensa rojiblanca pero un rechace caería en las botas de McGinn para poner el 0-2 en el 79′.
Los últimos fueron de los locales, pero los constantes ocasiones claras erradas mantenían a un Aston Villa con vida.
