Se disputaba un encuentro clave de cara a saber qué equipos del grupo H avanzarán a cuartos del Madrid. La victoria del Real Madrid ante Pachuca dejaba servida una batalla a todo o nada entre austriacos y saudíes, quienes debían ganar si no querían quedarse con un pie y medio fuera de octavos.
Primera Parte
Se notaba la urgencia que suponía este partido, posiblemente último tren al que subirse para el Al-Hilal, y oportunidad para los austriacos de certificar su pase antes de enfrentarse al siempre temible Real Madrid. Una derrota del equipo dirigido por Simone Inzaghi, les obligaría a depender de la derrota de los blancos en la última fecha, y ganar a Pachuca por más goles de los que tenga el Madrid por diferencia general.
La gran actuación del Al-Hilal contra el Madrid les hacía partir a priori como favoritos, pero la clasificación les ordenaba salir sí o sí a por los 3 puntos. Por ello salió con una marcha más que sus rivales, al igual que en la primera fecha. Las dos primeras ocasiones cayeron del lado azul, que primero con un disparo cruzado de Joao Cancelo, y después con una intentona de Salem, comenzó empujando.
Aún así, la posesión era del Salzburgo y el encuentro estaba siendo muy parejo. Los primeros minutos fueron tímidos por ambas partes, no queriendo nadie cometer un error que le pudiese costar un disgusto.
Probó desde lejos Bidstrup sorprender a Bono, aunque el marroquí blocó con seguridad el esférico.
Inmediatamente a continuación de esta jugada llegó la más clara hasta el momento para los saudíes. Balón descolgado dentro de área rival por Milinkovic Savic tras un centro escorado, con posterior remate a bocajarro de Marcos Leonardo prácticamente a dos metros del arco. Solamente la rápida reacción del defensa pudo impedir que se cantase el primer tanto en Washington.
Una vez sobrepasamos el ecuador del primer tiempo se hizo con el control del partido el Al-Hilal, viviendo de manera más constante en terreno contrario. Siguió faltando claridad en las ideas en cuanto a los últimos metros, el último pase y las decisiones no estaban siendo buenas, pero sí que comenzaba a dar la sensación de que pronto, en una u otra portería, iba a terminar llegando el gol.
Se sucedían las intentonas del Al-Hilal, que por las bandas y con la posesión estaba asentado en línea de tres cuartos todo el rato. En una sucesión de centros, y tras un saque de esquina, reclamaron una posible mano dentro del área, pero el colegiado desestimó la protesta.
Misma dinámica hasta la conclusión de los primeros 45 minutos, el Salzburgo aguantó defendiendo bien y buscando salidas esporádicas o tras robo, sobre todo con jugadas individuales.
Finalizó el primer tiempo con un disparo de Nene, el futbolista del Salzburgo probaría fortuna sin precisión, y su disparo iría demasiado centrado.

Segunda Parte
Empezó la segunda mitad igual que terminó la primera, le costaba sacar el balón jugado al Salzburgo, y ya en la primera jugada una mala cesión atrás puso en apuros a su portero, y Zawieschitzky tuvo que quitársela de encima como pudo.
A la salida de un córner, vendría una ocasión clarísima para los austriacos. En el minuto 48, gozaría el recién incorporado Mellberg de un remate solo contra Bono tras un remate cruzado de un compañero. El marroquí volvería a demostrar de que pasta está hecho haciendo un auténtico paradón, y a posteriori otro remate de Nene lo sacaría justo bajo palos Koulibaly, dejando al Salzburgo con la miel en los labios.
Réplica inmediata de Ruben Neves, que de nuevo buscó puerta desde lejos. El marcador seguía sin moverse despúes de los primeros 10 minutos.
Aumento notable del ritmo de partido, haciéndolo más entretenido al espectador presente, que comenzaba a despertar.
Minuto 57, contragolpe del Al-Hilal en situación de dos contra dos con Malcom con el balón. La jugada la terminó el propio Malcom, y la ilusión óptica hizo a parte del graderío cantar gol. Nueva oportunidad desperdiciada.
Otro penalti no pitado protestado por los saudíes, tras caída de Koulibaly después de un centro lateral de Milinkovic Savic. De nuevo Sampaio no decreataría el camino de los 11 metros.
No se movía el marcador, si lo hacía el banquillo de Inzaghi, que buscaba soluciones en el banquillo cerca del minuto 70, el gol no llegaba pero no el ritmo del partido no bajaba.
Destacable el buen papel de los defensores centrales de los dos equipos, su labor es quizás la más determinante junto al guardameta, y a veces no reciben el reconocimiento que se merecen. Gran partido de Gadou, central de tan solo 18 años, quien cuajó un partido que merece, por lo menos, que se le eche un ojo.
Agotaba sus cartuchos el Al-Hilal, se hacía grande Zawieschitzky, con una nueva parada a disparo desde fuera del área.
Minutos finales que dejaron entrever que el empate le parecía un buen resultado a ambos conjuntos, pero el que más llamó a la puerta fue el Salzburgo, consciente de que un gol les metía en cuartos de forma matemática. No se querían asumir riesgos importantes, ya que este marcador dejaba con opciones a los dos para la última fecha.
Queda por lo tanto todo abierto para la última fecha en el grupo del Real Madrid, con la única noticia de la eliminación matemática de Pachuca.
