El Manchester City se va de vacaciones con una derrota por 2-1, su tercera consecutiva, a manos de un Aston Villa que estuvo muy serio a lo largo del partido. Morgan Rogers fue el mejor del encuentro.
Guardiola reaparecía en el Villa Park con la presencia de Mateo Kovacic, ya recuperado de su lesión, y de Jack Grealish, que se enfrentaba ante su ex-equipo. En el lado de Unai Emery, aparecía de inicio Jhon Durán, por delante de Watkins, y Morgan Rogers, viejo conocido de la cantera citizen. Un encuentro con mucho morbo para los aficionados y que no decepcionó desde el pitido inicial.
Apenas 16 segundos tardó Jhon Durán en hacer su primer remate, tras un error garrafal de Gvardiol, que confirmaba las malas prestaciones que venía dando en los anteriores partidos, el cafetero resolvió mal en la definición ante Ortega que mandó el balón a córner. En ese mismo saque de esquina, Pau Torres realizó un remate muy peligroso que paró el alemán con una de las paradas del encuentro. Tras tres córneres a favor del Aston Villa en los primeros dos minutos, El Manchester City comenzaba a despertar y a acumular posesión en la mitad de la cancha. El primer remate de los de Guardiola lo realizaría Jack Grealish sin peligro, que estaba siendo víctima de abucheos, cada vez que tocaba el balón.
El marcaje contundente a Mateo Kovacic era una seña del juego táctico que proponía Unai Emery, hasta dos jugadores del Villa intentaban evitar que el croata controlara con soltura el esférico. El otro punto caliente del encuentro estaba en Grealish, que estaba siendo presionado por Matty Cash con mucha agresividad, y se desesperaba con el colegiado cada vez que recibía una falta. Unai Emery se estaba imponiendo a Guardiola en la táctica en los primeros compases del partido.
El primer gol del encuentro lo haría Jhon Durán, que aprovechó la titularidad, tras un pase a placer de Morgan Rogers. Youri Tielemans fue quien vio el hueco entre los defensas, prácticamente desde el área del Dibu, poniendo un balón perfecto para que resolvieran sus delanteros. Guardiola veía con decepción como se situaba atrás en el marcador una vez más.
El Manchester City estaba inoperante en ataque con un Erling Haaland ‘seco’ de balón y no lograron crear demasiadas jugadas del peligro, antes del final de la primera parte. Los citizens se marchaban por detrás en el marcador a los vestuarios y el Dibu Martínez con una amarilla tras unas protestas que no le gustaron a Peter Bankes.
En el minuto 50 Jhon Durán haría su doblete particular, sin embargo, este tanto fue anulado por fuera de juego. El colombiano estaba verdaderamente inspirado y Youri Tielemans le estaba encontrando con sus pases medidos. Morgan Rogers era la otra gran baza ofensiva que manejaban los de Unai Emery y en un jugadón con colectivo, estampó el balón contra el palo derecho de Ortega. Precisamente el inglés sería el protagonista del segundo gol de su equipo.
El jugador de 22 años cogió el balón desde su campo y con una galopada fue superando a jugadores del City, antes de cedérsela a McGinn. El escocés se la devolvió y el extremo definió con la pierna izquierda al palo largo del portero alemán. Junto con Tielemans, estaba siendo el jugador más destacado del partido. Doble golpe para Guardiola que se le seguía haciendo cuesta arriba el encuentro y el final de la primera parte de la temporada.
El tiempo seguía corriendo con reparto de la posesión entre ambos equipos, pero un dominador de las ocasiones más claras que era el Aston Villa. Mientras que las entradas de Savinho o de Doku no mejoraron las prestaciones en ataque de los visitantes, Ollie Watkins tuvo su primera gran ocasión, tras una combinación de pases entre Rogers y Tielemans, que la mandó directa al cuerpo de Ortega. Phil Foden recortaba distancias, tras un error de Digne, en el tiempo añadido, pero no fue suficiente para evitar la tercera derrota consecutiva del Manchester City.
Guardiola inauguraba las vacaciones de Navidad con una nueva derrota. El técnico de Santpedor tiene mucho trabajo por hacer y el mercado de fichajes está a la vuelta de la esquina.
