Ernesto Valverde ha comparecido ante los medios de comunicación después de la victoria por la mínima ante la Real Sociedad. Las primeras cuestiones incitaban a Valverde a hablar sobre lo difícil y disputado que ha estado en el encuentro, destacando los primeros 25 minutos donde el Athletic se ha encontrado muy cómodo en el terreno de juego, respondía de la siguiente manera: «Hemos empezado bien, la primera media hora les hemos creado peligro y ellos no conseguían sobrepasarnos, estábamos bien plantados» .

Pese a haber caído de pie en el encuentro, al «Txingurri» no le gustó como terminó la primera parte su equipo, ya que después del tanto de Sancet, la Real comenzaba a desarrollar su juego de manera fluida, así mismo lo dejó claro en rueda de prensa: » En el segundo tiempo hemos ido más arriba porque el final del primer tiempo no nos había gustado demasiado«.

Dejando de lado la primera parte, comenzaba a hablar de cómo  ha visto a su equipo durante los segundos 45 minutos. De entre sus palabras se destacan estas: «El segundo tiempo ha sido un partido dónde el gol podía llegar por cualquiera de las dos áreas«, también dejaba claro que la segunda parte fue muy disputada, en la que da por hecho esto:»En el  segundo tiempo estuvimos con menos opciones pero estamos contentos porque es un derbi y sabemos el componente emocional que tiene«.

Resalta también el ímpetu que tuvieron los dos equipos en el terreno de juego: «sometíamos al rival y el rival también nos sometía, en cada disputa, en cada balón dividido…».
