El ciclista francés logra rematar la fuga tras cazar a Tratnik en una etapa sin diferencias entre los favoritos en la llegada a Bocca della Selva

Gran alegría la que se llevó Valentin Paret-Peintre en una etapa en la que superó a su compatriota Romain Bardet que llegó a 29 segundos de Valentin. Una fuga inicial de tres ciclista acabó siendo neutralizada por un grupo de hasta 26 ciclistas, entre la que se encontraban Julian Alaphillippe, Juanpe López, Tobias Foss, Damiano Caruso, el propio Paret-Peintre o Esteban Chaves entre otros. En una fuga de mucho nivel y calidad, que puso en peligro a algunos de la general, aunque no al líder.

A menos de 25 kilómetros para la meta Bahrain e Ineos redujo en buena parte la diferencia, y  con el grupo delantero cada vez más seleccionado, Jan Tratnik, del Visma atacó en solitario abriendo un hueco de en torno a los 45 segundos. En el grupo perseguidor seguían Romain Bardet, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Andrea Bagioli y Marco Frigo. Éste último inició su persecución, aunque no reducían la diferencia. Tanto Frigo como Bagioi se descolgaron a cinco de meta. El dúo se rompió a dos kilómetros de meta con Paret-Peintre descolgando a Bardet y llegando hasta Tratnik. El de Decathlon no le dejó opción alguna al de Visma para poder cogerle la rueda, dirigiéndose hacia su primer triunfo profesional en la primera carrera de tres semanas del año.

Subió unas cuantas posiciones en la general Bardet, séptimo ahora a 4:57 en una jornada en la que Tadej Pogacar no se movió del pelotón. Entre los primeros no hubo cambios en la general más allá de otros trece segundos perdidos por Cian Uijdebroeks en los instantes finales de la subida a Bocca della Selva. Juanpe López, en la escapada, fue el mejor español, undécimo.
