Durante los últimos días y semanas han llovido las críticas al Balón de Oro entregado a Leo Messi este 2023. Muchos argumentan que Erling Haaland era el que realmente merecía el galardón, otros incluso, se atreven a decir que lo merecía Mbappé porque “el mundial del francés fue mejor”.

Hay muchos aspectos a tener en cuenta a la hora de entregar el premio, como los títulos individuales y colectivos conseguidos o el número de goles marcados. Durante 2023 es cierto que el “ciborg noruego” ha sido el que más veces ha perforado las mallas, llegando incluso a batir récords en el que fue su primer año en la Premier League.

Por otra parte, Kylian Mbappé ha sido el Bota de Oro del mundial. “Donatello” fue pieza clave para que Francia llegara a la final del mundial, en la que incluso marcó un hat-trick.

Y bien, después de todo esto ¿es sostenible defender que Messi merecía el Balón de Oro?

El argentino, a pesar de no haber cosechado sus mejores números en lo que a goles en liga se refiere, ha tenido un mundial para el recuerdo. Leo, además de salir campeón, jugó un mundial prácticamente “maradoniano”. El rosarino marcó en todas las fases del mundial, además de ganar el MVP en cada una de ellas. Fue el capitán de la mejor Argentina de los últimos años y consiguió prácticamente solo llevar a su selección a ganar lo que tanto ansiaba.

Para ser justos, si lo que hizo Messi lo hubiera hecho cualquier otro jugador en otra selección, no habría siquiera debate. El público se ha acostumbrado a que Messi haga cosas sencillamente espectaculares y cuando estas no lo son tanto, subestiman su trabajo hasta el punto de criticarlo.

Si es verdad que Haaland marcó muchos goles en liga, pero cuando realmente su equipo lo necesitó (en las semifinales y final de la Champions) este no fue capaz de mandar el balón a la jaula.

Mbappé por su parte, tuvo un mundial sublime, aunque para muchos expertos como Julio Maldini, el papel de Griezmann para Francia fue más importante. Kylian, a pesar de haber sido el máximo goleador de la competición, tuvo la pólvora mojada tanto en cuartos como en la semifinal, cuando su equipo estuvo al borde del precipicio.

A Leo siempre se le ha criticado por “solo marcarle a equipos pequeños” (a pesar de ser el máximo goleador en la historia de los Clásicos), y cuando este de verdad se echa a su equipo a la espalda para llevarlo a lo más alto del fútbol mundial, se le critica por marcar penaltis y tener solo 7 partidos buenos.

Leo Messi ha sido el mejor jugador individualmente durante el torneo más importante del 2022, el Mundial de Qatar, por eso es merecedor del premio al mejor jugador del 2022. Cuando realmente se le ha necesitado ha estado ahí, para, entre otras cosas, cumplir con la voluntad de Maradona: ser de nuevo campeón mundial.
