La epopeya babazorra que desafió a Europa
En el otoño del año 2000, cuando el fútbol europeo parecía un tablero reservado a los grandes, el Deportivo Alavés decidió iniciar su propia odisea. Lo hizo sin alardes, con la modestia de quien apenas asoma por primera vez al mapa continental, pero también con la determinación de quien sabe que los sueños no entienden de presupuestos. Bajo la dirección de José Manuel Esnal, Mané, aquel grupo de jugadores forjó una identidad que combinaba la solidaridad obrera con una valentía casi temeraria. No iban a limitarse a participar; querían dejar huella.
El viaje comenzó en tierras turcas, frente al Gaziantepspor, una eliminatoria que sirvió de bautismo de fuego. El Alavés sufrió, encajó goles, se tambaleó, pero resistió y acabó imponiéndose. Esa primera ronda tuvo algo de rito iniciático: el equipo comprendió que podía sobrevivir en un entorno hostil, que la camiseta vitoriana también podía brillar lejos de Mendizorroza.
Superado el susto inicial, el Alavés se cruzó con el Lillestrøm noruego, un rival menos intimidante pero igualmente incómodo. Allí también supo competir con aplomo, ganando la eliminatoria por un global de 5-3, demostrando que la ilusión podía ser un arma más poderosa que la experiencia. En los dieciseisavos, el sorteo volvió a emparejar a los vascos con un club nórdico: el Rosenborg, por entonces habitual de la Champions. Fue un cruce serio, de ritmo alto y exigencia táctica, pero el equipo vitoriano lo resolvió con oficio, imponiéndose por un 4-2 global.
Entonces llegó el turno del Inter de Milán, y con él la frontera entre la aventura y la leyenda. En Vitoria, el primer asalto terminó en un espectacular 3-3, un partido de ida que ya olía a epopeya. La vuelta, en el Giuseppe Meazza, fue una sinfonía de coraje y precisión: el Alavés se impuso 0-2 en uno de los escenarios más imponentes del fútbol mundial. Aquel resultado retumbó en toda Europa. Por primera vez, un club modesto de Vitoria-Gasteiz derribaba a un coloso italiano sin renunciar a su estilo.
En los cuartos de final, el destino quiso un duelo fraternal frente al Rayo Vallecano, otro de esos equipos pequeños que se habían ganado a pulso el respeto continental. Pero era el año del Alavés. Con más colmillo, más ritmo y una fe que parecía infinita, los babazorros vencieron por 4-2 en el global, avanzando a unas semifinales que ya eran historia viva para la entidad alavesista.
Y en esa semifinal, el rival fue el Kaiserslautern alemán. Si hasta entonces el Alavés había sido el invitado inesperado, en esta ronda se comportó como un aspirante sin complejos. En Mendizorroza, la ida terminó con un rotundo 5-1, un festival ofensivo que dejó al público en estado de incredulidad. En la vuelta, lejos de refugiarse, el equipo de Mané volvió a atacar y ganó 1-4. El global de 9-2 fue una declaración de principios: el fútbol valiente también podía ser ganador.
Aquella goleada abrió las puertas de la final de Dortmund, donde esperaba el Liverpool, cinco veces campeón de Europa y símbolo de la tradición futbolística inglesa. Lo que ocurrió el 16 de mayo de 2001 pertenece a la historia sentimental del fútbol: un 5-4 tras prórroga que aún hoy se recuerda como una de las finales más vibrantes de todos los tiempos.
El Liverpool dominó los primeros compases, pero el Alavés no se rindió nunca. Iván Alonso, Javi Moreno —autor de un doblete— y Jordi Cruyff, con un cabezazo en el 89’, mantuvieron vivo el sueño hasta el último suspiro. Ya en la prórroga, con nueve jugadores por las expulsiones de Magno y Karmona, el equipo resistió hasta que un infortunado rebote en Delfí Geli acabó en gol de oro. Fue una tragedia instantánea, pero también una despedida digna de héroes.
Aquel equipo no levantó la copa, pero sí algo más valioso: el respeto unánime del fútbol europeo. Lo suyo fue una gesta coral, una Panenka colectiva lanzada con valentía, belleza y una pizca de locura. El Alavés no jugó para sobrevivir, sino para emocionar. Y cuando el balón se coló en su propia red, nadie en Vitoria sintió vergüenza, porque habían visto a los suyos desafiar la lógica, retar al destino y hacerlo con estilo.
Esa primavera de 2001 quedó grabada para siempre. Fue una odisea sin trofeo, pero con una recompensa eterna: la certeza de que el fútbol, cuando se juega sin miedo, puede convertir lo imposible en memoria.
