Sin despeinarse. Haciendo el trabajo el sábado, consiguiendo la pole, Sainz tenía mucho ganado. Tan solo tuvo un pequeño encontronazo con Verstappen al principio de carrera, pero todo lo demás fue sobre ruedas, nunca mejor dicho. La buena degradación del Ferrari y las peleas de los de detrás le dejaron un camino de rosas hacia la victoria.

Salida accidentada
Antes de que el semáforo rojo se apagase, una gran pancarta en el Foro Sol hacía homenaje a Fernando Alonso, que corría su 400ª carrera. Catorce pilotos optaron por salir a la pista con neumático medio, mientras que los otros seis, que se encontraban al final de la parrilla, montaron duros. La salida fue accidentada, pues Yuki Tsunoda tuvo un fuerte accidente en la curva 1 y Alex Albon también quedó fuera de combate. Sainz y Verstappen corrieron en paralelo y, para cuando salió el Safety Car, el neerlandés ya iba liderando la carrera. Checo Pérez, que adelantó varios coches en los primeros metros, fue sancionado con 5 segundos por no haberse posicionado bien en la salida.
Al relanzarse la carrera, casi todos los pilotos tuvieron DRS. El primer cazado fue, precisamente, Max Verstappen. El español adelantó al piloto de Red Bull y este batalló con Norris: hasta 3 veces salieron uno o los dos coches de la pista. El inglés, por la radio, declaró que el movimiento había sido peligroso y los comisarios anotaron un incidente de Max, declarando que sacó a Norris fuera de la pista. El que aprovechó este duelo fue Leclerc, que se colocó segundo. Al final, Verstappen fue sancionado con 10 segundos por sacar a Noris en la curva 4.
En la vuelta 15, Russell adelantó a Hamilton tras perseguir a su compañero de equipo durante varias vueltas. En la vuelta 17 Alonso abandonó el Gran Premio por motivos mecánicos. A Verstappen se le sumaron 10 segundos más por forzar a sacar a Norris de la pista, esta vez en la curva 8.

La buena degradación de los Ferraris les permitió ir a un ritmo superior que los otros monoplazas cuando los neumáticos empezaban a decaer. Con los del equipo de Maranello tan adelantados, Norris aprovechaba para forzar a Verstappen, sabiendo las sanciones que tenía. Red Bull llamó al neerlandés a boxes, haciendo la parada más larga de la temporada y saliendo en la posición número 15. Empezó una difícil escalada.
En la vuelta 38, Verstappen adelantaba a Lawson y se colocaba en octava posición y en la 42 ya llegaba a los primeros coches, detrás de los Mercedes. Por su lado, los dos Haas se acercaban al neerlandés, pues tenían neumáticos más frescos. El otro Red Bull, Checo, estaba en 16ª posición con visibles daños en su pontón derecho. Norris, que empezó a perseguir muy de cerca a Leclerc, consiguió que el monegasco hiciese un error y saliese de la pista a menos de 10 vueltas del final. Los Mercedes volvieron a pelear entre ellos por el cuarto lugar y esta vez el 7 veces campeón del mundo se puso por delante. Al final, el podio lo conformaron Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris y Charles Leclerc.
