Joselu Mato, un madridista de los pies a la cabeza, un hombre que tuvo que abandonar su hogar para convertirse, 11 años después, en el héroe del Real Madrid, el artífice de los dos tantos de la remontada ante el Bayern de Múnich que han mandado al conjunto blanco a la final de la Champions en Wembley. Pero, ¿cómo han sido todos esos años de esfuerzo?

El Camino a “La Fábrica”

José Luis Mato Sanmartín “Joselu” nació el 27 de marzo de 1990 en Stuttgart, Alemania. Sin embargo, a partir de los cuatro años desarrolló su juventud en España, concretamente en Galicia. Fue allí donde empezó a dar sus primeras patadas a un balón y donde se encuentra su primer equipo, en el que todo comenzó, el S.D Silleda.

Sus primeros pasos en el fútbol profesional fueron en la temporada 2008/09 en el Celta de Vigo, que en ese momento jugaba en Segunda División. Durante esa campaña, combinó partidos con el primer equipo, el filial y el Juvenil de División de Honor. Gracias a sus grandes actuaciones y a su gran rendimiento, consiguió fichar por el equipo de sus amores, el Real Madrid.

El mercado de fichajes del Real Madrid en la temporada 2009/10 estuvo plagado de incorporaciones galácticas como Kaká, Benzema, Xavi Alonso o el mismísimo Cristiano Ronaldo. Sin embargo, Jorge Valdano, el director deportivo del conjunto blanco en aquel momento, vio con buenos ojos reforzar también la cantera y se fichó a un joven y talentoso delantero de Vigo por 1,5 millones de euros, Joselu Mato. El club tomó la decisión de mantenerle cedido en el Celta de Vigo por un año, pero no tardó en recabar en el club merengue.

El Inicio del Sueño, La Llegada a “La Fábrica”

Joselu pudo ponerse la camiseta del Real Madrid por primera vez en la temporada 2010/11 con el Real Madrid Castilla, el filial merengue, convirtiéndose en el máximo goleador del equipo con 14 dianas, solo igualado por un jovencísimo Álvaro Morata, compañero de equipo en aquel momento. Además, esa misma temporada tuvo la oportunidad de debutar con el primer equipo y no la desaprovechó. Su debut oficial se produjo en un partido de liga contra el Almería en el estadio Santiago Bernabéu y, en apenas unos minutos, logró anotar su primer gol con la elástica merengue a pase de Cristiano Ronaldo. También tuvo minutos en la Copa del Rey contra la S.D Ponferradina y, al igual que en liga, el delantero español consiguió anotar un nuevo tanto.

En la campaña siguiente, el Real Madrid Castilla consiguió el primer puesto en el grupo I de la Segunda División B y, tras una fase de ascenso de campeones en la que Joselu fue determinante con siete goles, logró el ascenso a la categoría de plata del fútbol español. Joselu fue una pieza angular durante todo el curso, ya que fue el pichichi de la competición con 24 dianas.

Regreso a Alemania

En el mercado de fichajes de verano de 2012, el delantero fue traspasado al Hoffenheim por 6 millones de euros. El inicio de la temporada fue espectacular para Joselu que empezó a anotar goles determinantes, como el que anotó frente al Fortuna Düsseldorf para lograr el empate a uno definitivo. Sin embargo, un cambio de entrenador mermó el crecimiento del jugador que empezó a ser un habitual en el banquillo y su primer curso en Alemania finalizó con 5 goles en 25 partidos.

El propio Joselu admitió que no fue capaz de adaptarse al equipo y salió cedido en la temporada 2013/14 al Eintracht de Frankfurt. Aquí pudo disputar por primera vez una competición europea, la Europa League, y volvió a su mejor versión con 14 goles en 33 partidos. Después del buen nivel que mostró, el Hannover 96 se hizo con sus servicios por 5 millones de euros y, en su única temporada allí, anotó 10 tantos en 32 encuentros.

La Frustración en Inglaterra

En la temporada 2015/16, gracias a sus cifras goleadoras en Alemania, logró llegar a la que, para muchos, es la liga más competitiva del mundo, la Premier League, concretamente al Stoke City por 5,75 millones de euros. En su estreno en la liga inglesa disputó 27 partidos y logró anotar cuatro goles. Después de un año complicado, el conjunto inglés decidió cederlo al Deportivo de La Coruña y Joselu volvió a España el 31 de agosto de 2016. Después de esta cesión, acabó en el Newcastle, también en la Premier League, donde no logró continuidad y, tras dos años, decidió regresar a España.

Consagración en España

Joselu regresó a la liga española en julio de 2019. Su destino fue el Alavés, equipo en el que estuvo tres temporadas y en el que fue determinante con sus actuaciones y, sobre todo, con sus goles. Su rendimiento fue tan alto que se consagró como uno de los grandes delanteros españoles de la liga y se convirtió en el máximo goleador de la historia del Alavés en Primera División con 36 goles.

Después de su gran rendimiento en Vitoria, en junio de 2022 dio comienzo una nueva etapa para el delantero español, esta vez en Barcelona en el RCD Espanyol. En su primera y única temporada, hasta el momento, logró ser el máximo anotador español de la liga y consiguió el Trofeo Zarra. Sin embargo, no pudo evitar el descenso de su equipo a LaLiga Hypermotion el día 28 de mayo de 2023 en Mestalla.

La Llamada de la Selección

Joselu fue un jugador importante en las categorías inferiores de España, sobre todo en la Sub-21, ya que aportó muchos goles y fue determinante para el buen rendimiento del equipo en aquellos años. Sin embargo, la llamada de la selección absoluta no le llegó hasta la temporada 2022/23 gracias a su despliegue goleador con el RCD Espanyol. Un recién llegado Luis de La Fuente decidió contar con él para la fase final de la Nations League y Joselu no desaprovechó la oportunidad, logrando anotar el gol de la victoria en semifinales frente a Croacia y ayudando a que España, finalmente, consiguiera hacerse con el título.

Reminiscencia Blanca

A pesar de que no pudo evitar el descenso del RCD Espanyol a Segunda División, sus buenos registros goleadores consiguieron el objetivo por el que Joselu llevaba trabajando desde que abandonó el Real Madrid en el verano de 2012, regresar a su casa y volver a vestir la camiseta del club de su corazón. El 19 de junio de 2023, el conjunto blanco hizo oficial la cesión de Joselu por una temporada, confirmando así su vuelta 11 años después. El día de su presentación no desaprovechó la oportunidad de mostrar su madridismo: “he soñado con este momento desde el día que marché”, fueron las palabras del delantero en el acto oficial de su presentación.

El fichaje frustrado de Mbappé empezó a levantar críticas hacia el de Joselu y a la idea de que él iba a ser el único delantero del equipo durante toda la temporada ya que, según muchos aficionados, el Madrid necesitaba un goleador de garantías. A pesar de las críticas y de la poca confianza que se depositó en él, Joselu tuvo un inicio de temporada espectacular y marcó su primer gol en su regreso al Madrid en la jornada 3 de liga frente al Getafe en el Santiago Bernabéu. Además, empezó a tener mucha participación con el equipo, llegando al parón invernal con siete goles anotados.

La segunda parte de la temporada ha sido más complicada para el delantero español. Sin embargo, esto no le ha impedido conseguir los dos primeros títulos para su palmarés: LaLiga EA Sports y la Supercopa de España. Pero, sin duda, su momento, el motivo por el que regresó al Real Madrid, ocurrió el pasado 8 de mayo en las semifinales de Champions contra el Bayern de Múnich.

El conjunto blanco estaba realizando un gran encuentro, pero un golazo de Davies puso por delante a los bávaros en el marcador y en la eliminatoria. En el minuto 81, Ancelotti decidió dar entrada a Brahim y a Joselu en busca de una nueva remontada para la historia en el Bernabéu, pero lo que nadie esperaba es que el delantero español iba a ser el héroe.
