Pepe Martí ha conseguido puntuar por primera vez en Fórmula E. El barcelonés, que salía último debido a una sanción, ha aprovechado un Safety car para reengancharse a la carrera y adelantar hasta la séptima posición, quedando entre los 10 primeros en tan solo su segunda carrera.
Martí llegaba a México con una sanción del anterior ePrix en Brasil. El de Cupra Kiro salió volando después de no interpretar como el resto de pilotos un Safety car, por lo que acabó estrellando y volando por encima de otros dos pilotos. Ante esta acción, los comisarios habían decidido retrasarlo hasta la última posición de parrilla en el ePrix de México.
Además, durante el fin de semana se le acumulaban los problemas al catalán, que se perdió los libres 2 por fallos en su monoplaza. Esto acabó con cambios en el motor para el número 3, y otra sanción, que en este caso se transformaría en un “stop and go” de 10 segundos.
Por lo tanto, nada más comenzar la carrera, en la vuelta 1, Pepe paró en boxes y la desventaja con el primero era de 50 segundos. El barcelonés ahorró energía ante la posibilidad de una neutralización que le permitiera reengancharse a la carrera, y eso pasó. De Vries detuvo su monoplaza en la escapatoria de la curva 1, y lo que en principio fue una bandera amarilla, se acabó convirtiendo en un Safety car.
Ahora Pepe Martí tenía la ventaja en cuanto a energía, aunque las activaciones del modo ataque eran prácticamente iguales para todos. No obstante, Martí utilizó los dos modos de ataque mejor que el resto de sus rivales, lo que le hizo escalar hasta la octava posición, que se convirtió en séptima al adelantar al Porsche de Müller.
