El Gran Premio de Qatar ya es historia y nos deja un panorama de cara a Abu Dhabi que jamás habríamos imaginado a inicios de año.
Y es que la salida ha sido bastante limpia para lo esperado, con un Lando Norris precavido que no le ha presentado excesiva batalla a Verstappen, quien ha logrado colarse en la segunda posición detrás de un Piastri que ha salido dándolo todo desde el principio.
También a destacar las buenísimas salidas de Fernando Alonso y Carlos Sainz, que se pondrían sexto y quinto respectivamente.
Sin embargo, un accidente de Hülkenberg en la vuelta 7, tras un toque con Gasly, cambiaría absolutamente todo el rumbo de la carrera y quién sabe si del Mundial.
Y es que es en este momento cuando Verstappen, junto a prácticamente todos los pilotos de la parrilla, decide aprovechar el safety car para parar en boxes. Sin embargo, hay dos pilotos que deciden no hacerlo: Norris y Piastri, quienes, por orden de equipo, se quedan fuera.
Esto provoca que Verstappen salga con ruedas bastante más nuevas que las de los pilotos papaya. Sin embargo, los pilotos papaya no van a tener tiempo ilimitado para intentar sacarle distancia a Verstappen y asegurarse una buena parada en boxes.
Y es que la normativa de Pirelli y la FIA en Qatar estipulaba que los pilotos debían parar máximo cada 25 vueltas para evitar pinchazos en los neumáticos. Lo que daba de margen a los de McLaren hasta la vuelta 25 para exprimir al máximo sus neumáticos y distanciarse lo máximo posible de Verstappen y el resto de los pilotos de la parrilla.
Entretanto, Esteban Ocon recibe una sanción de cinco segundos por moverse en la salida.
Sin embargo, las cosas empiezan a ponerse interesantes tras la marcha del safety car de pista, ya que los McLaren no terminan de sacar el tiempo suficiente a Verstappen como para poder lograr una parada gratuita, ya que los papaya contaban con más ritmo en carrera que el piloto holandés; sin embargo, no había suficiente distancia como para sacarle los 26 segundos necesarios para parar en boxes y salir por delante de él.
Tanto Verstappen como Red Bull son conscientes de ello y Verstappen empieza, poco a poco, a apretar tanto a Norris como a Piastri, con un Piastri bastante encendido que logra maximizar sus neumáticos, pero con un Lando Norris claramente por detrás, quien no se ha encontrado cómodo en todo el fin de semana y lo ha vuelto a demostrar en carrera en cuanto se ha encontrado en una situación de presión.
Llega la vuelta 24 y Piastri, por prioridad, es quien para primero, saliendo sin problemas delante de Fernando, pero teniendo a varios pilotos por delante. Mientras que Norris lo ha hecho al límite en la vuelta 25, quien ha logrado salir también delante de Fernando, pero gracias a una parada increíble por parte de McLaren.
Un Fernando que, para ese momento, se encontraba en sexta posición, haciendo un buen trenecito a pilotos como Hadjar, Russell o el propio Leclerc, quien ha confirmado en carrera que el Ferrari no era ni mucho menos competitivo este fin de semana, estando totalmente desaparecido en carrera.
Quien no ha vuelto a tener su fin de semana ha sido Lance Stroll, quien se iba sancionado con cinco segundos por ir demasiado rápido en el pitlane.
Sin embargo, volviendo a la acción de cabeza de carrera, Max, junto al resto de pilotos que lo habían acompañado en la vuelta 7, vuelve a parar en la 33, volviendo a tener una posición privilegiada respecto a los pilotos de McLaren.
Para este punto, Fernando, quien parecía tener controlados a los pilotos detrás y que se encontraba en una relativamente cómoda sexta posición, solo con Sainz cómo rival directo por delante, trompea, cayendo a la octava y teniendo que luchar de nuevo a contracorriente para recuperar su posición inicial. Cosa la cual recuperaría a medias, ya que, a falta de dos vueltas para el final, Hadjar sufriría uno de los terribles pinchazos con los que amenazaba Pirelli, cayendo de forma abrupta a la cola de la parrilla y recuperando Alonso una séptima posición que sabe algo agridulce.
Para este punto, Verstappen se encontraba líder cómodamente en la carrera, con un Piastri que venía por detrás pero al que le fallaban los tiempos, y es que no quedaban vueltas suficientes para intentar plantarle cara al astro holandés. Mientras que Norris parecía que se iba a tener que conformar con una quinta posición, ya que Carlos Sainz había aprovechado los múltiples incidentes en pista para colocar su Williams en una heroica tercera posición, cruzando la línea de meta y logrando su segundo podio con Williams y segundo podio de la temporada, confirmando que el piloto madrileño está de regreso a un nivel realmente superlativo, muy superior al de su compañero y colocando al Williams donde seguramente no le tocaba estar.
Delante de él cruzaba en la línea de meta Piastri en segunda posición, cerca de Max, pero no lo suficiente como para pasarle. Y Verstappen, que contra todo pronóstico, ganaba la carrera y apretaba todavía más si cabe el Mundial para Abu Dhabi.
Sin embargo, cuando parecía que Antonelli sería el piloto que cruzaría en cuarta posición, un error en pista ha provocado que Norris le adelantase, acabando cuarto y cambiando las matemáticas necesarias para el Gran Premio de Abu Dhabi. Y es que, gracias a este adelantamiento in extremis, Lando Norris solo necesitaría quedar tercero en Abu Dhabi para proclamarse campeón del mundo de Fórmula 1.
