Y no fue hasta el minuto 18 que los de Cornellá tuvieron su primera acción peligrosa tras un potente centro bajo de Jofre, que no llegaban a convertir los delanteros al salir rebotado el balón por culpa del palo.
Pasado el minuto 20, los visitantes comenzaron a llegar mas al área de Sivera, que tuvo que intervenir en varias ocasiones ante el asedio espanyolista. A pesar de que los de Vitoria se habían caracterizado por su buen juego defensivo (siendo el equipo menos goleado de la liga hasta el momento), a nivel ofensivo estaban imperiales, generando mucho peligro por las bandas, y con un gran Calebe que estaba poniendo en aprietos a la defensa rival.
Pero la superioridad de los Babazorros fue muy notable tras anotar el 2 a 0 Lucas Boyé con un remate desde fuera del área por el palo derecho del portero.
Durante la segunda mitad del primer tiempo, el Espanyol empezó a coger más ritmo pero sin ninguna fortuna, siendo el más destacado a nivel defensivo Riedel, que realizó varios pases claves entre líneas. Edu Expósito y Pere Milla dieron sentido al juego de su equipo, y Jofre resultó una pieza fundamental en las transiciones defensivas. Por último, el portero visitante paró todo lo que pudo.
Por el contrario, los de Germán Coudet fueron dominantes en todos los aspectos, jugando todos bien, aunque cabe destacar el buen rendimiento de la defensa. Los más influyentes fueron Boyé, protagonista en ambos goles, y Denis Suárez.
