Repasamos la historia de uno de los porteros más influyentes y destacados del conjunto olívico
Como olvidar cualquier tarde viendo al Celta, once de gala dispuesto a sacar los tres puntos en una nueva jornada liguera, y ahí estaba él: Metro setenta y pico, reflejos de gato, y sus más que habituales kits de portero casi siempre de color naranja. Sergio siempre era un fijo en los equipo del Celta, daba igual que dirigiera al equipo: Berrizzo, Unzué o Luis Enrique, el portero gallego siempre estaba presente.
Daba igual si el equipo estaba agonizando en segunda, luchando por la salvación en primera o jugando competición europea, siempre lo tenias . Lo más probable es que se encontrara debajo de los palos, regalándonos actuaciones de merito como el derbi de de 2014 contra el Depor donde detuvo un penalti agónico al final para que posteriormente el Celta ganara 3-1, o como en 2017 donde sostuvo en Old Trafford al Celta ante un United «Que vale millones y ha sido enjaulado en su campo por un grupo de amigos» (como bien dijo Don Iago Aspas).
Sin embargo, el no siempre era de la partida, y ahí es donde se veía que no era uno más, sino que era una leyenda, que vivía el equipo y el escudo como nadie antes, durante y después. Ya podría llevar sin jugar casi 2 meses que el tío salía del banquillo como si fuera el segundo del entrenador de turno, ya fuera a animar a cualquier compañero, a dar instrucciones, o a felicitar a su querido Aspas por el habitual partidazo realizado.
Inicios
Poca gente te empalma más de 5 años jugando en el filial de un equipo, sin fallar y sin subir al primer equipo, esperando pacientemente una oportunidad que estaba asegurada. Desde 2004 hasta 2011 el portero gallego defendió la portería del filial de sus amores. Solamente en la 08/09 salió por primera y única vez del equipo para jugar cedido en el Racing de Ferrol, oportunidad de crecer profesionalmente, y sin tampoco irse muy lejos de su casa. Acumuló 167 partidos en el filial olívico promediando más de dos paradas por partido y ayudando al equipo en la siempre difícil Segunda División «B».
Y al fin con un Celta ya metido en Play-off, en la última jornada de la temporada 10/11, el astro de Catoira hacía su debut profesional con el equipo de sus amores, en un contundente 3-0 ante el Cartagena. No iba a ser un camino fácil, pero el ya había metido el pie en la plantilla, y de ahí no le iban a sacar en mucho tiempo.
Carrera profesional
Fue clave en la temporada del ascenso a primera división (2011-2012) y aunque luego tuvo un par de años de suplencias continuas, el sabía que calidad tenía de sobra y que una vez entrara en la portería, un tío de casa, con ese carisma y con esas ganas de comerse el mundo no iba a salir ya de ahí. En la 14/15 fue un muro inapelable, jugando todos los minutos disponibles en liga, siendo determinante en uno de los partidos contra el eterno rival y regalando porterías a cero de ensueño como la del 2-0 en Balaidos ante todo un Atlético de Madrid.
Sus siguientes años no fueron más que una confirmación de su increíble estado de forma y de que el había llegado para quedarse. Sergio era un jugador de culto. Por aquel entonces a mi la gente me hacia preguntas muy comunes en el ámbito futbolístico, que si que prefieres a Ter Stegen o a Navas, que si que bueno es Oblak, pero yo siempre decía lo mismo: A mi dame a ese Gato de Catoira de la 16/17.
Que manera de pasear con orgullo el escudo por Europa ese año. Después de un año mágico y de clasificar 6º en liga, el Celta de la mano de Sergio, Aspas, Wass y compañía tenía un sueño: La Europa League. Fíjate si era difícil la papeleta que ya de inicio el temible Ajax se veía en el horizonte de la fase de grupos, junto a un duro viaje a Grecia y otro a Bélgica. Nada, segundos de grupo y a seguir deslumbrando. Quién me iba a decir a mi, 15 añitos por aquel entonces, que este señor de un pequeño pueblo gallego, iba a apear de Europa a todo un Shakhtar que no pudo hacerle ni un solo gol en su feudo allá por Ucrania y que vio como Aspas y Cabral le remontaban el 0-1 de la ida. Krasnodar y Genk tampoco pudieron con el muro que era este tío ese año, si a mi me preguntas top 5 mejores del continente sin duda. El dolor llegó en las semis ante el United, donde solo una falta en la ida, y el mítico Fellaini pudieron batir al cancerbero del Celta. Pero esto le dio igual, porque los pupilos de Mourinho acabaron frustrados ante sus continuas apariciones bajo los palos en un teatro de los sueños que a punto estuvo de ser de los felices.
Ya después de esto, su leyenda se siguió acrecentando: Otros dos años de defensa de la portería hasta que llego la fatídica 19/20. Ese año no empezó jugando, y ya bien entrada la temporada y habiendo entrado algo más en juego, una dura lesión de rodilla lo aparto del fútbol. Parecía que sería momentáneo pero al final fue definitivo y el arquero gallego no se volvió a vestir de corto. Se le hizo una despedida a finales de la siguiente temporada de estas que duelen: Retransmitida por Youtube, con afición, familia y equipo dándole el adiós. Creo que es la vez que más he llorado en el panorama fútbol en toda mi vida.
Sergio Álvarez, ese señor por el que hice ir a mis padres a Galicia a ver su pueblo, solo por que era su pueblo, ese jugador que me cruce en un hotel y me dedicó una amigable charla en la que tuvo que hablar mi padre por que yo no podía para de llorar, esa leyenda por la cual me enamore de este deporte y por la cual veía con más alegría al equipo de mis amores. Solo queda darle las gracias por todo lo que dio, y por todo lo que da desde la dirección del club a día de hoy, y rezar que en un futuro, al enseñar sus paradas a alguien, esa persona también se enamore de este deporte gracias a el.
