Se animaba el Marsella, de nuevo a través de Weah. El americano remataba esta vez desde la frontal y Courtois se empleaba a fondo para detener el esférico. Cuando el equipo visitante atravesaba los mejores momentos, llegaba Rodrygo para provocar un penalti que se encargaría Mbappé de transformar en gol e igualar el electrónico.
Los blancos volvían a animarse, Mastantuono combinaba con Mbappé y el argentino se iba de tres defensores con un regate en una baldosa. Aunque Rulli, muy atento, achicaba y se hacía con el balón. Segunda parte
Mbappé y el Madrid seguían apretando. Tras un disparo del francés que rebotaba en Aubameyang, el esférico se estrellaba en el travesaño. Con el paso de los minutos el ritmo iba bajando y el Madrid atravesaba sus peores minutos. Por ello, Xabi Alonso daba entrada a Brahim y Vinícius por Rodrygo y Mastantuono.
Tras una revisión en el VAR, Carvajal era expulsado por un «cabezazo» sobre Rulli que dejaba más dudas en ambas aficiones que otra cosa. Alonso volvía a mover el banquillo para dar entrada a Asencio y cambiar a Güler para reorganizar el equipo. El partido poco a poco fue perdiendo el frenético ritmo de la primera parte y solo se veían destellos de esta.
El Madrid se iba animando y Rulli seguía salvando al Marsella. Vinícius se internaba en el área y Medina tras rechazarla con el cuerpo daba con el brazo en el balón. El colegiado no se le pensó dos veces y señaló un penalti que, nuevamente, Mbappé transformaba.
Los franceses se iban animando y obligaban a Courtois a emplearse a fondo para evitar el empate. El colegiado daba 7 minutos de descuento en el que los visitantes lo intentaban de todas las maneras pero no fueron capaces de derribar el muro belga.
Con esta victoria, el Madrid firma un buen inicio de Champions en el que disputaron sus mejor primer tiempo.
