El Villarreal dominó de manera general pero no pudo rematar la faena y terminó empatando el partido. 

El Villarreal domina pero no consigue el gol

El partido comenzaba con un dominio claro de los locales. El submarino amarillo jugó a su fútbol sin tener en cuenta cómo plantearía el Athletic el partido. Las imprecisiones de los visitantes hizo que el Villarreal buscara portería enseguida, los laterales tuvieron mucho protagonismo, Femenía y Cardona acompañaban a los delanteros en busca de una superioridad a la hora del  1vs1. 

Incluso, se atrevían a rematar entre los 3 palos, dejando a los leones noqueados sin saber como hacer frente al equipo local. No fue hasta los pasados 15 minutos que el Athletic comenzaba a despertar y a adelantar las líneas para ir al ataque.

Los de Ernesto Valverde mediante los centros laterales conseguía hacer daño a la zaga del Villarreal, y esto provocaba desahogar el juego en su propio campo.

Sin embargo, las imprecisiones seguían presentes y el Villarreal aprovechaba estas situaciones para buscar la espalda de los centrales, y hacer llegar el balón a Ayoze o Barry. La afición al ver que el equipo llegaba cada vez con más peligro alentaba a los jugadores para que tuvieran un plus extra.

Los locales ahogaron a los visitantes, sin embargo, el gol no llegó y el árbitro daba por finalizada la primera parte.

El encuentro llegaba a su recta final y el marcador seguía siendo de 0-0, ningún equipo quería marcharse a casa sin los 3 puntos, y los duelos empezaban a ser más duros. Debido a esto, el partido volvió a cambiar. Pape Gueye vería la tarjeta roja después de una dura entrada a Maroan.

El árbitro al principio sacó la tarjeta amarilla pero tras revisarlo de nuevo en el VAR lo expulsó. Sobre el terreno de juego, tras la expulsión de Gueye en el 83´,  se vivió de manera diferente. El Athletic se hizo con el control del esférico y al Villarreal no le quedaba más remedio que defender.
