El primer tanto del Submarino amarillo tardo en aparecer. Un centro de Cardona fue rematado por Baena, adelantando al Villarreal en apenas siete minutos del segundo tiempo.
El cuadro visitante buscaba el segundo gol. Esta vez fue Ayoze quien disparó, pero el balón salió desviado tras tocar en un defensor. En el ecuador de la segunda mitad, el Villarreal amplió su ventaja. Marcelino dio los primeros minutos a Buchanan, uno de los fichajes del mercado invernal, sustituyendo a Yeremy Pino.
La UD Las Palmas le puso emoción al encuentro en los minutos finales. Un disparo de Fuster rebotó en un defensor, desviando la trayectoria del balón y enviándolo al fondo de la red. McBurnie estuvo a punto de igualar el marcador con una fantástica chilena, pero el balón se estrelló en el poste. Finalmente, el colegiado señaló el final del partido con victoria visitante por 1-2.
