El Real Madrid recibía al conjunto gallego en el feudo blanco con la intención de conseguir el pase a cuartos de final a costa de los intereses celestes tras el batacazo de la Supercopa

Primera Parte

El conjunto merengue comenzaba el encuentro con su particular dominio en el terreno de juego. Modric y Ceballos cogieron las riendas del balón, mientras que brahim buscaba con insistencia encontrar su sitio en la periferia del ataque local. Los vigueses contrarestaron el inicio blanco, logrando una falta en la frontal del área que mingueza estrelló contra la barrera. En el propio saque de esquina Starfelt con templanza conectaba un remate de cabeza que se iba desviado tras impactar con el larguero.

Alrededor del minuto 5, Modric probó sin éxito con un tímido disparo centrado a Villar. Tras esto, el equipo visitante quiso dejar claras sus intenciones, haciéndose con el dominio del balón e intentando resguardarse con él en campo contrario. Llegados a los 14 minutos Tchouameni probó con un cañonazo de 25 metros los tres palos visitantes, provocando una portentosa estirada del guardameta celeste.

El Real Madrid giraba el juego de lado a lado sin conseguir aproximarse con claridad a la portería del Celta. En el minuto 29 Brahim recibió de espaldas en la esquina derecha del área, giró con clase y definió con la pierna mala con un disparo cruzado que rechazó con el pie Villar. Tras una acción polémica donde el Celta pidio penalti de Lunin, el Real Madrid aprovechó la contra con un Mbappé eléctrico, que recortó en el área y con sangre fría cruzó la pelota con su pierna menos hábil para adelantar a los blancos. Con lo sucedido, concluiría la primera parte  en favor de los de Carletto.

Segunda Parte

La segunda parte de la contienda comenzaría en favor de los intereses merengues, en el minuto 48 Brahim filtró un pase potenciado por la carrera de Vinicius, que definió con sutileza encontrando el camino hacia el segundo tanto. El gol merengue mermó la intensidad visitante, sacudiendo con brusquedad la estabilidad del equipo dirigido por Giráldez. En el minuto 56, Brahim recortó a escasos metros de la línea de fondo y colgó un centro que Mbappé con poca fortuna remató por encima de los tres palos.

Escasos segundos después, un error en salida del Celta estuvo a punto de ser castigado por el Real Madrid, el cual vio como Starfelt evitaba en la línea de gol un espectacular tanto de vaselina de Vinicius. Cerca del minuto 70, el recién entrado Sotelo sorprendió a los blancos con un certero disparo que por poco consiguió atajar el ucraniano Lunin. En el minuto 78 un tanto de Guler sería anulado tras una posición antireglamentaria del carioca.

Inesperadamente, cuando más calmadas estaban las aguas, el celta aprovechón un flagrante error en salida del Madrid para que Bamba recortase distancias en el minuto 83.

Último arrebato

Los gallegos olieron la sangre madrileña, y saltaron en tromba con el objetivo de igualar el marcador. Las acciones a balón parado y las transiciones se sucedían. En el minuto 90 explotaba la locura en el Bernabeu, Bamba conseguía provocar un penalti en un acción desafortunada de Asencio. A Marcos Alonso no le temblaría el pulso para anotar la pena máxima y forzar la prórroga.

Prórroga

Los dos equipos, expectantes ante la incertidumbre del encuentro, intercambiaban tímidos golpes sin efecto real durante los primeros instantes de la prórroga. El primer ciclo de la prórroga terminaría sin grandes sobresaltos, al margen de un balón estrellado contra el poste izquierdo cortesía de Antonio Rudiger.

En la segunda parte del tiempo extra, los blancos se volcaron al ataque en busca del pase hacia los cuartos de final. La energía madridista surgió efecto, siendo el protagonista inesperado Endrick, que recibió la pelota de Guler en la frontal del área y fusiló al segundo palo a Villar. El Bernabeu estallaba en júbilo. 

La alegría local se extendería cuando Federico Valverde, enganchó una pelota en el aire y desde prácticamente 25 metros enchufó un tanto antológico por la escuadra izquierda. Sin suspiro alguno, Endrick con un taconazo en el área pequeña firmaría su particular doblete, y sentenciaría la eliminatoria con el quinto tanto. La tarde de sombras terminaba en la capital española, el conjunto merengue se hacía con el pase a cuartos.
