El jugador norteamericano llega a la Liga Endesa tras su intenso periplo de tres años en Turquía
Nathan Michael «Nate» Sestina (Pensilvania, 12 de mayo de 1997) ha sido presentado como nuevo jugador de Valencia Basket esta misma tarde en la tienda Movistar ubicada en el centro de la capital del Turia. Ha firmado un contrato de dos años con el club valenciano y lleva ya unas semanas entrenando con sus nuevos compañeros bajo la tutela de Pedro Martínez. Sin duda, su incorporación supone un salto de calidad para Valencia Basket para la posición de ala-pívot.
Nate Sestina llegó a Europa en 2021 tras no ser elegido en el Draft de 2020. Después de un año en Israel, el estadounidense se marchó a la liga turca, donde ha ido creciendo año tras año hasta lograr jugar la Euroliga con la camiseta de Fenerbahçe. En ella, de la mano de Jasikevicius, fue un jugador muy importante en la Final Four, donde promedió nueve puntos y tres rebotes.

Enric Carbonell, director general de Valencia Basket, ha dado la bienvenida al nuevo fichaje. Le ha descrito como «un 4 de los de toda la vida», cuya misión será facilitar que el juego del equipo pueda abrirse hacia las esquinas. Sestina, que se acerca 40% de efectividad respecto a triples, es todavía «un jugador en crecimiento» que tiene capacidad de mejora y que «aportará mucha energía» sobre la pista. Para Carbonell, el americano es un «Yes Sir Boy», es decir, un baloncestista muy trabajador que está dispuesto a ayudar a su equipo desde donde haga falta.
Las primeras palabras de Sestina como taronja
Nate Sestina pronunció sus primeras palabras como jugador de Valencia Basket ante los medios de comunicación y los aficionados presentes. Reconoció que «las expectativas de Pedro Martínez son altas», pero afirmó que, si continúan trabajando, el éxito llegará con el tiempo. Además, enfatizó que el trabajo de Dimitrios Itoudis y Saras Jasikevicius -técnicos suyos en Fenerbahçe- le ha «ayudado a ser ahora entrenado» por Pedro Martínez, a quien describió como «muy detallista».
«Es un entrenador exigente, que pide mucho, que me reclama que traiga mucha energía, que ayude a jugar rápido y que tire», destacó Sestina. Consultado sobre las altas expectativas puestas en el equipo, afirmó que es algo que pueden cumplir. Además, señaló que el técnico catalán «entiende lo que hace falta para ganar y la importancia de construirlo día a día», queriendo decir que los triunfos «acabarán llegando» en un club «con una gran tradición e historia».
Nate Sestina reconoció que necesitan «tiempo para ajustar las piezas» porque hay bastantes novedades, pero el estadounidense afirmó que con trabajo y tiempo Valencia Basket puede tener «una temporada exitosa con muchas victorias». Por otro lado, insistió en que hará lo que sea necesario para cuidarse «dentro y fuera del campo». Al ser cuestionado sobre qué le parece que le definan como un «Yes Sir Boy», comentó que su entorno familiar -relacionado con la Marina estadounidense- le ha enseñado a «sacrificarse» y a enfocarse en el baloncesto.
En cuanto a su adaptación al equipo, mencionó que está siendo fácil tanto dentro como fuera de la pista. Por último, destacó que lo que más le ha gustado de Valencia -aparte del sol, la playa y la comida- es la tranquilidad y el estilo de vida. Acostumbrado al caos de Estambul, el estilo de vida más pausado de los valencianos ha sido de los aspectos que más le han sorprendido gratamente.
