Planteamiento táctico
Los equipos de Valverde se destacan por su enfoque ofensivo y valentía en la salida de balón, utilizando un esquema 4-2-3-1 con interiores versátiles que reciben entre líneas y se giran, lo que fomenta un mediocampo compuesto por jugadores con buena técnica y capacidad de asociación, asumiendo altos riesgos que potencian los beneficios en el juego. Gracias a este planteamiento jugadores como Oihan Sancet han crecido mucho y ganado mucha importancia en el primer equipo.
Portería
Salvo sorpresa, el portero titular del conjunto vasco será Julen Agirrezabala. Normalmente es el suplente del equipo, pero después de la lesión de Unai Simón, será Julen quien ocupe la portería. Dicho guardameta, pese a ser el suplente, ha hecho grandes actuaciones en la Copa del Rey; llegando a ganarla el año pasado.
Defensa
Probablemente la línea defensiva este formada por Andoni Gorosabel, Dani Vivian, Yeray y Iñigo Lekue. El curso anterior, la línea defensiva del Athletic Club fue una de las más solidas de todo el campeonato, encajando 37 goles en 38 jornadas. Será un hueso muy duro de roer para la delantera valencianista.
Centro del campo
En esta demarcación probablemente habrán rotaciones y posiblemente jugarán Beñat Prados y Ander Herrera como pivotes en la zona de creación; siempre dispuestos a bajar a recibir a la línea defensiva para poder subir el balón. Más adelante de ellos dos, jugará Oihan Sancet, un fijo en el esquema de Valverde que llevará el balón a las zonas más peligrosas y entrará al remate en segunda línea.
Delantera
Para estos puestos el entrenador dará descanso a su estrella, Nico Williams, ya que arrastra unas molestias del último partido, aunque está convocado, es muy dificil que salga de titular. Lo más seguro es que los titulares sean Iñaki Williams y Alex Berenguer en las bandas y Gorka Guruzata en la punta de ataque. En la temporada anterior, el equipo bilbaino anotó 61 goles, siendo uno de los equipos más goleadores del campeonato.
