Cucurella fue una de las grandes sorpresas de la convocatoria de España para la Eurocopa. Sin embargo, la apuesta de Luis de la Fuente ha sorprendido a muchas personas por sus buenos resultados y su nivel

El lateral izquierdo de España y del Chelsea llegaba a la presente Eurocopa con, a priori, pocas opciones de jugar debido a que contaba con la competencia de un Grimaldo que venía de desarrollar una temporada espectacular en el Bayern Leverkusen.

Todo parecía indicar que Grimaldo iba a empezar la partida e iba a ser el lateral izquierdo de la selección para esta Eurocopa. Y es que si comparamos las estadísticas de ambos jugadores, encontramos que el lateral del Leverkusen cuenta con unos grandes números: 10 goles y 15 asistencias en 33 partidos de Bundesliga. Unas estadísticas tremendas que completa con 2 goles y 4 asistencias en la Europa League, en la que además fue finalista.

Por su parte, Cucurella no ha tenido tanto protagonismo con el Chelsea: disputó 21 partidos en los que ha repartido 2 asistencias y ha anotado un único tanto. Sin embargo, destaca, por encima de todo, por su poderío defensivo, algo de lo que el club londinense es conocedor y, por ello, pagó 65 millones al Brighton por los servicios del lateral español.

A pesar de no empezar como el favorito para ocupar el lateral izquierdo de la selección, Luis de la Fuente hizo una apuesta por el jugador catalán en el debut de España frente a Croacia. Lo que nadie esperaba era el nivel que ofreció en aquel encuentro siendo una pieza angular para la victoria de España por tres goles a cero. Después de ser el cuarto jugador de España con más kilómetros recorridos frente a Croacia (10,7) y de evitar un gol de Croacia bajo palos, Marc Cucurella terminó el partido envuelto en elogios y con un gran apoyo por parte de los aficionados.

Su gran actuación le valió para volver a formar parte del once frente a Italia en uno de los partidos de la Eurocopa hasta el momento. El combinado español consiguió una victoria vital que le aseguró el pase a los octavos de final como cabeza del grupo “B” en un gran encuentro de todos sus jugadores y en el que, una vez más, Cucurella volvió a descartar con un 100% de efectividad en sus pases.

Bendito problema tiene Luis de la Fuente con el carril izquierdo de la selección, ya que tendrá que elegir entre el poderío defensivo de Cucurella o la gran capacidad ofensiva de Grimaldo. Por el momento, el lateral del Chelsea se ha impuesto al del Bayern Leverkusen, aunque todo apunta a que, con los deberes ya hechos, Luis de la Fuente hará varias rotaciones y Grimaldo entrará en el once en el partido frente a Albania con el objetivo de dar descanso a algunos jugadores de cara a los octavos de final.
