El del jugador de Maryland fue, probablemente,el caso más impactante en la NBA sobre el abuso de las drogas en la década de 1980
1986. 6:30 de la mañana del 19 de junio. Washington, Estados Unidos. Una llamada al 911 alerta a los servicios médicos sobre una sobredosis de cocaína, algo que, desafortunadamente, era bastante común en Estados Unidos, y más concretamente en la capital, durante los años 80, en plena epidemia del crack. Lo que parecía una conversación tristemente rutinaria, dio un vuelco de 180 grados cuando Bryan Tribble, la persona que había realizado el aviso, pronunció el nombre de la víctima: Len Bias.
Leonard Kevin Bias fue el nombre completo con el que se le bautizó en Landover, Maryland, en noviembre de 1963. Bias recibió de pequeño un mote, impuesto por el pastor Gregory Edmond, que le acompañaría toda su vida: “Frosty”. El apodo viene dado porque se decía que Len era “alto y fresco y tranquilo y sin pretensiones”. Su primera experiencia en un equipo fue cuando se unió al Northwestern High School en su Maryland natal. Allí se desarrolló como alero y comenzó a llamar la atención de las universidades por su talento y su imponente físico, alcanzando los 2,03 de altura, algo ideal para su posición. En su último año en el instituto, “Frosty” fue obsequiado por Parade con su presencia en el cuarto mejor equipo del país entre los jugadores de secundaria.
Su legado en la universidad y rivalidad con Jordan
Tras su periplo en el instituto de Northwest, Len Bias seguiría su carrera en el estado que le vio nacer, fichando por la Universidad de Maryland en 1982. Sería durante sus cuatro años universitarios cuando Bias explotó como un excelente jugador de baloncesto, convirtiéndose así en un referente dentro de la juventud afroamericana. Pese a los bajos números en su primer año, con solo 7,3 puntos de promedio, pudo revertir la situación y mejorar su conducta durante su estancia en la universidad. Ya en su segunda temporada, el número “34” alcanzó los 15 puntos y en enero de 1984 tuvo lugar su primer enfrentamiento ante la Universidad de Carolina del Norte, que en cuyas filas contaba con, nada más ni nada menos que Michael Jordan. Aunque el partido cayó del lado de los de Carolina, el duelo anotador entre las dos jóvenes estrellas se lo llevó Bias, con 24 puntos, tres más que Jordan. Ese mismo año, “Frosty” sería elegido como MVP de la ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference), aunque este no sería el único premio individual que lograría en su etapa en el college, en 1985 y 1986, relevaría al mismísimo Jordan como jugador del año de la ACC, entrando así en el mejor quinteto universitario del año. Al término de su estancia en Maryland, su capacidad atlética, su dinamismo y su espectacular tiro en suspensión, hicieron que los expertos le consideraran como el alero más completo que jamás había salido de una universidad. Estas palabras convencieron finalmente a los Boston Celtics para que apostaran por el de Maryland como el recambio natural de Larry Bird. Los vigentes campeones de la NBA por aquel entonces seleccionaron a Bias en la segunda posición del draft de 1986. Tal era la expectación que el propio Bird se comprometió a entrenar con los rookies tras la selección de Len.

La fatídica noche del 18 de junio
Al día siguiente de ser elegido por los Celtics, Bias viaja a la capital de Massachusetts junto a su padre para firmar un contrato con Reebok a cambio de un millón y medio de dólares. La intención de la marca deportiva era la de diseñar unas zapatillas que pudieran rivalizar en ventas con las Air Jordan de Nike. Tras esto, Len voló de vuelta a Maryland para celebrar su reciente entrada en la NBA. Después de estar brevemente en una fiesta con compañeros, regresó a su habitación en el campus de Maryland, donde junto a unos amigos, esnifó cocaína hasta que comenzó a convulsionar para acabar falleciendo. Su muerte causó una enorme conmoción tanto en Maryland como en Boston, donde su fallecimiento llegó a ser comparado en impacto con el del presidente Kennedy. Como dato curioso a la par que bonito y que resume muy bien la rivalidad con Jordan, las primeras flores en llegar a su funeral fueron las del jugador de los Chicago Bulls.
Esta no sería la única tragedia ocurrida en la familia Bias y es que, en 1990, el hermano de Len y también jugador de baloncesto, Jay Bias fue asesinado a tiros dentro de su coche en Hyattsville.
Dicen que la muerte mitifica, y más aún cuando se da en el ámbito deportivo, pero en la historia de Len Bias lo clave no es la marca que pudo dejar dentro de los parqués de la NBA o si realmente era el jugador destinado a plantar cara a MJ , sino lo que supuso su fallecimiento en la lucha contra la droga en los Estados Unidos, haciendo que las condenas por posesión se endurecieran y que la NBA aumentara el control a sus jugadores con la intención de evitar que se reprodujera otra tragedia como la de Len Bias.
