El técnico argentino fue el artífice de la época dorada del Real Valladolid con una histórica clasificación a la Copa de la UEFA

Tal día como hoy, hace tres años, el Real Valladolid conocía la muerte de Vicente Cantatore, mítico entrenador del conjunto blanquivioleta en la época dorada del club. El chileno dirigió hasta en 199 ocasiones al conjunto pucelano, entre sus tres etapas y, hasta el momento, es el técnico con más partidos de su historia.

Las cifras en el cuadro vallisoletano son a abrumadoras con 80 victorias, 48 empates y 71 derrotas en las siete temporadas que dirigió al equipo en sus tres etapas y siempre en Primera División.

Cantatore llegó a Valladolid en la temporada 85/86 siendo un gran desconocido en España, pero precedido de su fama en Chile, donde consiguió llevar a Cobreloa a la final de la Copa Libertadores hasta en dos ocasiones.

En su año de aterrizaje consiguió una holgada décima posición. Pese a ello, anunció su dimisión para la campaña siguiente por desavenencias con Gonzalo Alonso, presidente en aquella época, debido a los pocos fichajes que el club realizó para la temporada siguiente.

Segunda etapa

Su vuelta a tierras pucelanos no se hizo mucho de rogar, ya que la insistencia de la directiva tuvo sus frutos, lo que le llevó a conseguir la octava posición en la Liga 87/88 y la sexta en la 88/89, año que llevó al Real Valladolid a una final de Copa del Rey ante el Real Madrid en el Estadio Vicente Calderón, con lo que obtuvo el pase a Europa (Recopa).

La derrota en la competición del K.O en la 88/89 fue el último partido del técnico argentino en su segunda etapa, y se marchó para entrenar al Sevilla. Durante este tiempo también recaló en las filas de Universidad Católica, Rosario Central, Colo Colo y C.D. Tenerife.

Última etapa con final agridulce

La vuelta de Cantatore se produce, como un fichaje estrella, el 31 de enero de 1996, con Marcos Fernández, como máximo mandatario, consciente de la mala situación que atraviesa el equipo, en descenso y a seis puntos de la salvación. Finalmente consiguió la tan ansiada permanencia que, en un principio, parecía cuesta arriba.

La temporada 96/97, fue de ensueño, ya que el equipo quedó en séptima posición y se clasificó para la Copa de la UEFA. Ya en la campaña 97/98 a pocos días del debut del Real Valladolid en la competición, el entrenador argentino no llegó a debutar tras su sonada destitución en directo a través del programa radiofónico Supergarcía.

Sin duda, el Real Valladolid que hoy conocemos no sería el que es sin la figura de alguien tan ilustre como Don Vicente Cantatore.
