La afición del Atlético de Madrid se ha acostumbrado a leer el nombre de «Witsel» cuando mira el once inicial. Y es que el belga se ha colocado dentro del TOP 5 jugadores que más minutos ha disputado esta temporada, más concretamente en la cuarta posición. Sus 1.264 minutos (según Transfermarkt) reafirman el buen momento que está pasando como jugador colchonero, y es que solo le superan tres jugadores de grandísima importancia como Oblak, Hermoso y Griezmann.
El gol que anotó en el último partido liguero tan solo ha sido la guinda de un pastel que se ha ido moldeando desde el inicio de temporada. Y a pesar de que todo el mundo le colocaba como el cuarto o incluso quinto central tras los fichajes de Soyuncu o Azpilicueta, Witsel ha demostrado que a sus 35 años aún tiene mucho fútbol en sus pies.
De hecho, es propiamente su juego de pies lo que le ha mantenido en el once titular del técnico argentino. La reconversión del estilo de juego de Simeone obliga a los defensas tener buen trato del balón para salir jugando, y ahí Witsel se luce.
