Las Vegas GP: polémica antes de empezar el show

La construcción del circuito en mitad de la ciudad ha comportado problemas en la vida de sus residentes y turistas.

Con el pasar de los años, es cada vez más común ver circuitos internacionales en el calendario de la Fórmula 1. En sus inicios y durante el grueso de su vida, la categoría principalmente ha desarrollado sus carreras en pistas europeas. No obstante, gracias a la popularización de la F1, el deporte motor fue ganando protagonismo de manera global y acabó trasladando sus shows a otros continentes. En  esta temporada, que ya está llegando a su fin, tan solo 10 de las 23 carreras se han corrido en tierras europeas; el fenómeno se ha ido expandiendo.

Bernie Ecclestone, ex presidente de la F1, fue uno de los ‘culpables’ de esta apertura al mundo. «Estamos compitiendo por un campeonato mundial, no por un campeonato europeo. Es bueno que siga así», declaró el pasado lunes en el diario NOS. No está de más añadir que, ni para Ecclestone ni para muchos aficionados del motor, todo vale. El magnate, en la misma entrevista, criticó el Gran Premio de Las Vegas: «No tengo muchas ganas de que llegue. ¿Por qué no? No tiene nada que ver con la Fórmula 1″. La verdad es que la carrera en Nevada aún no ha empezado y ya ha supuesto problemas para los vecinos, los empleados que trabajan en su construcción y para los mismos coches.

Tragedia en las obras

La logística necesaria para montar un circuito en una ciudad tan famosa y concurrida como Las Vegas es enorme. Los tiempos de montura son rápidos y los trabajadores que están en las obras deben ser lo más eficientes posible. Las prisas y los timings por la finalización de la pista hicieron que, desgraciadamente, un trabajador perdiese la vida.

Los hechos se produjeron el 24 de septiembre cerca de las Fuentes de Bellagio. El constructor, de 37 años, estaba poniendo a punto una de las gradas VIP y tuvo un accidente. Los servicios sanitarios lo encontraron con un gran corte en el cuello e inmediatamente lo trasladaron al University Medical Center. Los médicos no pudieron hacer nada y declararon su muerte. La portavoz de la Administración de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional de Nevada, Teri Williams, aseguró que la organización estaba investigando los hechos. Sin embargo, medios locales como Las Vegas Journal intentaron ponerse en contacto con la empresa organizadora y no obtuvieron respuesta.

Vecinos indignados

Los más afectados por las obras del circuito han sido los vecinos. Se han quejado de algunas medidas que la organización y la F1 han aplicado a la hora de la construcción de la pista: ha habido tala de árboles, cierre de lugares icónicos e instalación de paneles para tapar lugares públicos desde donde se podría ver la carrera.

Los árboles frente a las Fuentes de Bellagio fueron removidos para poder construir gradas en esa ubicación. Habitantes de Las Vegas empezaron a subir vídeos y fotos a redes sociales para protestar contra esta medida, criticando a su vez la F1 por el impacto medioambiental que estaba causando en la ciudad. MGM Resorts, el grupo empresarial que gestiona el hotel frente a las fuentes, emitió un comunicado para informar que «forma parte de los preparativos para el Grand Prix de Las Vegas y de nuestros esfuerzos por ofrecer la mejor experiencia posible mediante la mejora de la visibilidad, la movilidad y el acceso y la seguridad de los peatones”.

Además, la organización también ha empezado a reducir la visibilidad. Los puentes peatonales de cristal, donde usualmente se pueden ver las carreteras, han sido cubiertos para tapar ciertos puntos del trazado del circuito. Los turistas que hayan visitado Las Vegas para estas fechas también se han quedado sin poder ver lugares icónicos como el volcán Mirage o el canal de góndolas de Venetian, que han sido cubiertos para colocar gradas.

A todo esto se le ha de sumar una posible problemática para el funcionamiento del Gran Premio. Unos 35 mil trabajadores de hoteles, casinos y restaurantes de Las Vegas han programado una huelga para el viernes 10 de noviembre. No se han renovado algunos contratos con grandes consorcios como MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment y Wynn Encore Resort, entidades que controlan la mayoría de los establecimientos en la ciudad. Muchos de los servicios quedarán abiertos con personal mínimo y otros no podrán abrir. Esto, en teoría, no afectaría al fin de semana de F1, pero la organización de la carrera estará pendiente de la evolución de la huelga.

Problemas en los neumáticos

El GP aún no ha empezado y ya se auguran problemas para los pilotos. Mario Isola, en una entrevista para NU.nl, ha reconocido que hay incógnitas sobre cómo van a funcionar los neumáticos. El asfalto de la pista va a ser totalmente nuevo y las temperaturas bastante bajas. A todo eso, se le ha de sumar el horario: varios libres se disputarán por la tarde y la clasificación y la carrera por la noche. El director de Pirelli declaró que decidieron «utilizar los tres compuestos más blandos de nuestra gama para intentar generar agarre». También añadió que se imagina «mucha evolución en pista y muy poco agarre, así que se quejarán (los pilotos). No pasa nada. También gestionaremos esta situación, pero es una gran incógnita. Una pista rápida, largas rectas, alta velocidad y todas las condiciones que son bastante difíciles de gestionar».

¿Más show que carrera?

La promoción del GP de Las Vegas ha estado focalizada, en gran parte, en el espectáculo que habrá entorno a él. Los pilotos deberán estar presentes desde el miércoles en la pista, pues el ‘fin de semana’ empezará con una gran ceremonia de apertura que contará con las actuaciones de Anndrea Daym Bishop Briggs, J. Balvin, Journay, Keith Urban, Steve Aoki, Swedish House Mafia, Thirty Secons to Mars y Will.i.am. También habrá un show del Cirque du Soleil. Todo esto tendrá lugar en la recta de salida, que estará ocupada por seis escenarios y cientos de focos y láseres, además de fuegos artificiales y drones que adornarán el cielo.

La pista también estará tematizada. Símbolos de cartas de póker decorarán los pianos y varios pilotos presentarán cascos exclusivos para la ocasión. Pese a toda esta ambientación, la realidad es que, a una semana de la celebración, los precios de las entradas y alojamientos en la ciudad de Nevada están cayendo drásticamente. El mes pasado, por ejemplo, el ticket más barato para la carrera del sábado costaba 1,645 dólares. A día de hoy, ese boleto cuesta 1,060 dólares, lo que supone un descenso del 35,6% de su valor.
