El español inició la defensa de su título lanzando un mensaje contundente con su victoria en las calles de St. Petersburg
El piloto de Chip Ganassi dominó la carrera inaugural del campeonato en St. Petersburg, aprovechando al máximo cada oportunidad. Una espectacular estrategia a lo largo de toda la carrera con una excelente gestión de neumáticos y combustible, sobre todo en la primera parte de la carrera.
Al cruzar la meta, Palou tenía una ventaja de 2.8669 segundos sobre Scott Dixon y de 6.2044 sobre Josef Newgarden. El vencedor de las 500 Millas 2024 no pudo soportar el envite final de Dixon y se vio forzado a reducir el ritmo, posiblemente por tener el combustible justo después de haber estado presionando para mantenerse al nivel de Palou.
Inicio accidentado
La victoria resultó inesperada para Palou, pues en la sesión de clasificación no mostró su máximo rendimiento, saliendo en octava posición. En un circuito donde adelantar es sumamente complicado, parecía que sus posibilidades se veían reducidas.
Todo comenzó en la primera vuelta cuando Power impactó por detrás a Siegel, involucrando a Foster en el incidente; lo ocurrido en la parte trasera del pelotón obligó a desplegar la precaución. Palou, al igual que aquellos que apostaron por iniciar con los neumáticos alternativos realizó una parada para cambiar a los compuestos duros y desechar los menos eficientes. Se había calculado que estos neumáticos alternativos rendirían entre 8 y 10 vueltas como máximo, pero tras apenas cuatro o cinco vueltas, se mostraron inferiores al desempeño de los neumáticos convencionales.

Estrategia espectacular
A 30 vueltas del final, los pilotos realizaron una tercera parada, una adicional a la planeada, lo que dio paso a unas últimas 20 vueltas llenas de adrenalina. En la vuelta 70, Scott Dixon lideraba, seguido por Palou, McLaughlin, Rosenqvist y Newgarden, quien acababa de parar para intentar un undercut sobre los dos coches de Ganassi. Dixon fue el siguiente en detenerse, saliendo justo antes que Newgarden, pero, con los neumáticos fríos, no logró mantener su ventaja frente al estadounidense. Aunque este último se apartó cuando quedaban cinco vueltas, la ventaja se incrementó nuevamente hasta alcanzar el segundo, mientras Dixon aprovechaba cada oportunidad para presionar al Penske.
Herta: lo que pudo ser y no fue
Finalmente, Palou gestionó de forma impecable tanto sus neumáticos como el combustible. Tras sobrepasar a Robb, se distanció y Newgarden comenzó a ceder terreno, permitiendo que Dixon capitalizara la situación. Otro factor determinante en el resultado final fueron los errores en boxes de Colton Herta. El piloto, que había salido segundo con los neumáticos de banda roja, realizó la misma maniobra que Palou y Dixon para deshacerse de ellos tras la única cautela de la carrera; sin embargo, en su segunda parada se demoró demasiado y, además, no logró repostar el combustible necesario, lo que le obligó a detenerse de nuevo y terminó por truncar sus esperanzas de victoria.
