Dos goles espectaculares de Julián Álvarez certifican la victoria del Atleti en Champions contra el Bayer Leverkusen
El Atlético de Madrid volvía a la Champions League con la oportunidad de afianzar una posición privilegiada para la clasificación directa a octavos de final. Pero el obstáculo sería el Bayer Leverkusen de Xabi Alonso, que tienen un punto más. De ganar los alemanes, entrarían también en posiciones factibles para entrar directamente en octavos. Los de Simeone tendrían que hacer un gran trabajo para pasar por encima al Leverkusen.
Primera parte
Los primeros quince minutos estuvieron marcados por un repliegue de los colchoneros ante diversos ataques del Bayer Leverkusen. Tan repetitivo fueron los ataques, sobre todo por la banda de Nahuel Molina que un centro de Grimaldo llegó a Nahuel Tella y de primeras marcó gol. Este gol fue anulado por fuera de juego. Después de este ataque llegó una volea de Florian Wirtz que detuvo Oblak.
En el minuto 23 llegaría una amarilla para Barrios que se convertiría en tarjeta roja tras una revisión del VAR. Davide Massa cambió su opinión debido a que el mediocentro español le dio con los tacos de su bota en el gemelo de Tella. Problemas para el Atlético que se quedaba con uno menos con 75 minutos de encuentro por delante.
A diez minutos del final de la primera mitad, el Atleti, en desventaja, estuvo sufriendo numerosos disparos desde fuera del área sobre todo, parecía al caer el primer gol de los alemanes.
Con dos minutos de descuento, cuando parecía que ya se iban ambos conjuntos al túnel de vestuarios llegó el gol que estaba al caer, un centro de Nordi Mukiele aterrizó en la cabeza del ecuatoriano Hincapié que definió a la perfección para poner el 0-1. Con este gol terminaría la primera parte.
Segunda parte
Siete de la segunda mitad y el Atleti consiguió empatar. Después de un ataque repelido por Reinildo, el balón llegó a Griezmann un poco más atrás de la línea de medio campo y con un pase alto al hueco a Julián, el argentino se cocinó él solo el gol. Un forcejeo con Tah que terminó en un disparo con la izquierda y al fondo de las mallas.
Tras el gol, el Leverkusen insistía pero el Atlético supo sacar las castañas del fuego tirando de coraje y corazón teniendo incluso ataques dispares. Contra todo pronóstico los rojiblancos conservaban sus piernas.
Con 15 minutos restantes el Bayer Leverkusen se quedaba también con uno menos, una conducción de Giuliano por la línea de fondo hizo que el defensa ecuatoriano, Hincapié, se lo llevara por delante y entre protestas, se llevó la cartulina roja. El partido empezaba a romperse y convertirse en un ida y vuelta, esto le interesaba al «Cholo».
Poco menos de 5 minutos quedaban por jugar en el Metropolitano y el Atleti parecía que atacaba más que los alemanes y llegó el milagro. Gol de Julián Álvarez a pase de Correa, con un regate al portero del Leverkusen puso a los colchoneros por delante en el marcador. Tras este gol terminó el partido.
