Denis Law, leyenda de aquel Manchester United con Best y Bobby Charlton, contribuyó al descenso del equipo de sus amores, y para colmo lo hizo con su máximo rival, el Manchester City.
¿Quién es Denis Low?
Denis Law es considerado una de las grandes leyendas del Manchester United. Tanto así, que le homenajearon con la famosa estatua en las afueras de Old Trafford, donde aparece junto con Bobby Charlton y George Best, con los que formaba la santísima trinidad.
Law, fue uno de los partícipes en la conquista de la primera Copa de Europa del Manchester United en 1968. Además fue clave para superar el gran trauma de Munich de 1965. Un año antes, el escoces ya había sido galardonado con el Balón de Oro.
El inicio del desastre
Es en 1973 cuando se fractura todo. El Manchester United pensó que la etapa de Denis Law ya había acabado en el club, y le dejó ir. Fue el Manchester City, máximo rival del United, el que le ofreció un contrato de un año que a Law le permitió hacer lo único que le faltaba, jugar un Mundial, y ese fue el de Alemania 74. En ese Mundial solo jugó un partido y después del campeonato se retiró.
Por el lado de los `Red Devil´, la temporada 1973/1974 no estaba siendo la mejor. Llegaban al final de la campaña teniendo que ganar al Manchester City de Denis Law y esperar a que el Birmingham perdiera esa misma tarde de abril para poder quedarse en la máxima categoría del fútbol inglés.
El Manchester City llegaba sin nada que jugarse al encuentro, pero con las ganas que siempre da fastidiar a tu máximo rival. El marcador permanecía 0-0 hasta que Denis Law, como si de una película de Hollywood se tratase, puso el balón en el fondo de las mallas del club de su vida, y para colmo lo hizo de tacón. Al marcar un gol contra tu antiguo equipo, lo normal es no celebrarlo, pues eso fue poco para lo que sintió Law en aquel momento, una sensación de culpa y odio interno cubrió su cara. Aunque el United hubiera ganado esa tarde, no podría haberse salvado por la victoria del Birmingham 2-1 frente al Norwich que garantizaba el descenso del equipo que había sido campeón de Europa 6 años antes.
Law, aun siente la culpa cuando es preguntado sobre cuánto le duró el sentimiento: «¿Cuánto hace del partido?» es lo que responde, alegando que esa culpa de descender al equipo de tu vida no se va nunca.
