El Rayo Vallecano sorprendió al Real Madrid en un encuentro que, a priori, parecía sencillo para los merengues pero que, tras el paso de los minutos, se les fue poniendo cuesta arriba. Los de Iñigo Pérez supieron contener al Real Madrid que no pudo hacerse con los tres puntos en Vallecas.
Primera parte
Comenzaron los primeros 45 minutos del encuentro con un gran dominio por parte del conjunto blanco y, gracias a este control, en el minuto 3, Joselu consiguió anotar el primer del gol del partido tras un pase excepcional de Valverde. Las ocasiones por parte de los merengues seguían llegando y el Rayo Vallecano no conseguía salir con el balón por lo que la defensa franjirroja no paraba de actuar. Esta gran juego de los blancos tenía resultados y, en el minuto 18, Joselu consiguió establecer el 0-2 pero, debido a que el balón había salido previamente, el gol no subió al marcador.

Sin embargo, el Rayo Vallecano quería conseguir empatar el partido y, tras un disparo de Trejo en el minuto 24, el balón impactó en la mano de Camavinga y el colegiado señaló penalti tras la revisión en el VAR. RDT fue el elegido para lanzar la pena máxima y, en el minuto 27, puso el 1-1 en el marcador. El Rayo Vallecano consiguió revivir con su primer gol y empezó a poner al Real Madrid en aprietos aunque los blancos no bajaron su nivel y, en el minuto 34, Valverde tiró una volea que impactó en el palo de la portería de Dimitrevski.

Poco a poco el Rayo Vallecano iba mejorando y, en el minuto 42, Álvaro García ejecutó un disparo que Lunin supo resolver con solvencia. La primera parte terminó con un Rayo que fue de menos a más y un Real Madrid que, tras el empate, se desinfló.
Segunda parte
El Rayo Vallecano comenzó la segunda parte tal y como terminó la primera y, en el minuto 46, tras un fallo de Tchouaméni, Álvaro García armó un disparo que resolvió el mismo Tchouaméni enmendando su error. Ambos equipos estaban muy parejos, pero el Real Madrid en el minuto 58 consiguió una ocasión con un remate de Joselu que se encontró con Dimitrevski. Los banquillos se comenzaron a mover en busca de un revulsivo que rompiese la igualdad.

Sin embargo, el encuentro seguía con mucha pausa sin apenas ocasiones de gol pero, en el minuto 77, tras una falta sobre Luka Modrić, Kroos hizo emplearse a fondo a Dimitrevski que desvió el balón a córner. En los últimos minutos del encuentro, ambos equipos despertaron para intentar llevarse los tres puntos. Tal era la intensidad que Carvajal dio un golpe a Kike Pérez tras una falta que este cometió sobre el defensa blanco y terminó siendo expulsado por doble amarilla, ya que anteriormente protestó enérgicamente un córner que no pitó el colegiado. El partido terminó con un empate con dos caras, para los franjirrojos vale oro, pero al Real Madrid le hace perder la carrera hacia el título.
